I am ready to build with 2012 motherboard or Newer Mb. Should i get a newer motherboard. I just use computer for internet, and browser games. I thinking in next 4 years PC might have a big jump in technology. I using 2012 Asus MB. with I5-2500, 3.3 Ghz, 16GB of ddr 3 ram. white box i build, in 2015. I have 3 computers i can built, Asus M5 A97 MB. with FX-4100, 3.6 Ghz. 2nd one is Asrock Z77 Extreme 4, MB. with I5- 3330. 3 Ghz. 3rd one is Asrock 970 Extreme 3, MB. with FX-4170, 4.2 Ghz. I picked up a Asus Tuf gaming B550-Plus, Wi-Fi , MB. for my upgrade to replace my Intel I5-2500 , white box.

I am ready to build with 2012 motherboard and all the other parts. But should i get 2019 or newer motherboard. Then i would have to buy a bunch of parts for newer motherboard. I just use computer for internet, and browser games. I thinking in next 4 years PC might have a big jump in technology. I using 2012 built white box i build, for last 5 years working ok so far. I was looking looking at AM4 ,B550 motherboards.
It's not only MB that's in question. Much changed since 2012, mostly CPUs and RAM. That is your primary concern. Other changes include advanced versions of PCIe, Much faster USB and super fast M.2 NVME (PCIex4 and eve faster M.2 PCIe x4 v4 sockets for appropriate SSD drives.
CPUs in average got more cores, higher...
I dont know if you understand you corectly. If you only use it for that and you are saying it works fine where is the point? If you want new one with old motherboard you need check if new cpu have the same socket as old one, does it support new megahertz in ram etc.

Imo you if you want build something you should get new motherboard, for am4 - Gigabyte B450 AORUS ELITE V2 will be fine, its cheap and will do the work.

thanks for reply, so b450 is close to b550, so should be good for next 5 years. I don't know if i should just built new computer with my new 2012 motherboard to save money and if it would be okay for next 5 years.

I mean you cant rly build much with mobo from 2012, cuz of equipment limitations, you can do something but is it rly worth it for a litle improvment? It is always better to start with better mobo, if future you can always add better specs.

CPUs in average got more cores, higher frequencies and in general much better performance/price ratio. In addition, there are processors with much better graphics negating use of lower end dedicated GPUs and enabling you to even play most games.

An i7 from 2012 is the equivalent (or worse) than a current gen i3.

AMD?? The am2+/am3 cpu's don't even have a modern day equivalent perfoemance wise apart from maybe a $40 modern day athlon (which would still be stronger on single core strength).

I mean, it may be worth using a board from 2012 if you can source compatible components second hand and very cheap IF it suits your uses and is just for general Internetting etc.
Its just not worth sinking much money into at all.

I have been using my 2012 computer for at least 5 1/2 years now.

Pass. Outdated crap, worse than current.
2nd one is Asrock Z77 Extreme 4, MB. with I5- 3330. 3 Ghz.
Pretty much the same as current. Not really worth to "upgrade" to that.
3rd one is Asrock 970 Extreme 3, MB. with FX-4170, 4.2 Ghz. I have all other parts for them.
Pass. Outdated crap, worse than current.

very hard too find those cpu brand new.

You don't need brand-new CPU, it's the most reliable component of a PC, it doesn't die just because it's old. It only dies when you break it or your O/C goes wrong.

During my two decades of building and fixing computers, I've never seen a CPU that doesn't work., Intel, AMD, Cyrix...

Motherboards and RAM modules are usually the first parts to fail.

So if you find an used CPU with fair price, just grab it.

For those who think a 2012 motherboard is trash, think again.

The last bus or train you used might have been 10 years old.

The last airliner you flew for your holiday might have been 15 years old.

Your dear country's armed force may have fighter aircraft that are 20 years old.

All the things above will continue to serve people for years to come.

So a Z390 MB with I3-8350k Cpu, 16GB of DDR-4 2666 ram, should be a good upgrade of my I5- 2500 white box computer.

Thanks for your input, You have best answer, I have Asus Tuf Gaming B550- Plus-wi-fi Mb and G.skill Ddr4 3600 16 GB. of Ram to start my new built, now just Cpu hunting.
