i have 2x radeon r9 200 and want to upgrade 1 card only, not using crossfire. will this work?

Basically i'm building a new pc and plan on robbing one of my 3gig cards to put in the new one and using it as an excuse to get a new 6-8gig radeon card as primary, using the second card for my second display so the 3gig card is still being made use of. will this work? (cant really afford to buy 2x 6-8gig cards right now.

Nope you can only put same cards in crossfire.(Directx 12 may support different gpus)

sorry for not being clear, as title states i don't want to use crossfire, just using the secondary card(3gig) to run a second display. one display per card.
