i got this card from a friend because he got a new computer. it came out of an Alienware tower anywhere between 2017-2021. its a Dell card and I have become aware that Nvidia did not make 2070 cards with 16GB VRAM. Is this rare?

I see forums where people are upgrading their cards to have 16GB but thats all i see. I just want a little more information 😀

Yeah highly doubtful it has 16gb vram. Maybe mistaken for system ram since those Alienware prebuilts would've commonly had 16gb ram.

See with Gpuz as said above.
Are you certain about the memory? Use GPU-Z and share a screen capture for others to see. Upload to a site like imgur.com and then post a link here.

idk if this is right. my friend is using it back home and im at college. if i was home i could get you what you wanted

your gpu is 8gb.. and the windows system allocates an additional 8gb for swapping data..(buffer space) ,so that the graphics card can move that data from its memory to pc and get a new 8gb of information. it helps to keep frame rates up. or it would have to drop the frame rates while it cleared its memory, this way it just moves it to the computers hard drive "temporary"

you will notice that it does the same with your main "RAM" as well..

It probably wouldn't matter even if it did have 16gb of physical memory. I have a Firepro W8100, which is basically an R9 290 with 8gb of VRAM, instead of the usual 4gb, and when I tested it by cranking up the visuals to use as much of the VRAM as possible, it became almost unusable. The extra VRAM was usable in apps that utilize GPU compute, but not so usable for gaming.
