Can you plug a 20-pin into a 24-pin?
I found a post from 2015 here, but since thats 10 years ago I thought it may have changed.
So I am building a rack mounted router and have been looking for a psu with low Watts and with a 24-pin and a 8-pin. I have just bought a supermicro PWS-505P 500watts platinum for my Supermicro X11SCL-F mobo. Just incase I don’t find any another good options.
So my question is, does a 20-pin work with a 24-pin connector, I have found the Supermicro PWS-203-1H 200watts. With only a 20-pin which seems more reasonable then the 500watts.

The PSU you've found is used, correct? If so, how old is the PSU?

does a 20-pin work with a 24-pin connector,
If your PSU lacks the connectors for your devices, you either have;
a| the wrong PSU for the job
or
b| the wrong components for your PSU.

My advice, instead of sourcing used PSU's that are missing connectors, why not look at something like this;

Although not "best practice" I have done this on a number of low power builds and they've continued to work fine for years. The additional 4 contacts that increase a 20-way connector to 24-way are two +12V and two 0V wires, which "beef up" the +12V supply to the motherboard.

If you're not using a stupidly high powered CPU and GPU combination on that SuperMicro board, the whole computer will probably pull less than 120W from the wall and work on a 20-pin supply (plus the separate ATX12V CPU supply).

If the CPU can pull in excess of 100W and you fit a GTX3090, no way would I recommend such practice.

The choice is yours. It's worked for me.
