Dead HDA in old laptop needs replacement - need to know if it will support new SATA drives and if it can use an SSD. SSD's didn't exist when this machine was built, so I don't know if it will work with one. I am not sure it can support a larger capacity standard 2.5" HDA either. The machine originally was equipped with a 4200 rpm SATA 200gb drive which is unrecoverable.

Solution
From my understanding as long as the mobo can support ACHI or SATA mode. Then an SSD should work. Check your BIOS. Speed of the drive is relevant in terms of compatibility.
