I am wondering if it is even compatible or if I will need to upgrade my motherboard? Also let me know if there's a better option out there. Thanks!

No it isn't. You're going to need a new board and new ram to pair with the Ryzen 7 3700X. How much do you have to perform your upgrade. Also, you need to list your current system's specs like so:
CPU:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:

definitively no, if you want a new amd cpu, you need a new motherboard for it, that has support for amd products, you are looking for at least a x470 motherboard and 2x8gbs ddr4 3000mhz to go with it because the old motherboard must be using ddr3 and that ram type was abandoned like 4 years ago

don't forget to buy a fast ssd or nvme so you get the best performance possible if you don't have one already

psu is decent and should work for the new build i think

Are their any good upgrades that would work for my current build then? Only reason I came up with the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X was because I was told it's one of the best cpu's out there atm.
My budget is around $500 I would rather not go higher but it is possible.

The 4790K is still a great chip for gaming and gets the job done in 1080 or 1440 depending on the title of course and supporting hardware.

As far as the Z97 chipset which is 3rd/4th Gen, i7-4770K or the i7 - 4790K are the best CPU's for that Generation if you're talking gaming.

I also have another question for you, I've decided to go with the i7 - 4790K once atm on amazon its cheaper then the other one. I will be installing it myself. Do I need a new fan to go with it or can I keep my old one and my second question do I need to buy new thermal paste?
Thanks again!

You can reuse your fan that you're using now with your 4590. Are you using the stock intel cooler?

Yes you will need new thermal paste. Any brand is good, personally i use Grizzly Kryonaut.
