I recently watched a video about how to overclock my cpu to 5ghz with the same specs or nearly the same specs and it seems to work but when i start a game it drops to 4.7ghz, im wondering if this is normal or if it should stay at a steady 5ghz.
i am btw new to overclocking so any tips and tricks would be great.

CPU: i5-8600k
GPU: GTX 1070
RAM: 16GB 2400MHZ
MTB: MSI Z370 GAMING CARBON PRO
PSU: 600 WATT
HDD: Seagate 2tb
SSD: KINGSTON 120GB

temps also seem to be fine at around 65-80 degrees celcious.

Okay, the overclock is not stable...and probably needs a higher vcore or higher LLC...I do not know how the MSI board BIOS works as I have a Gigabyte board. Hopefully someone can jump in or look for a thread on the forums for overclocking settings on the MSI board but see below for some help..

There are a lot of threads like this one but do look around as you will find some with good settings that you can use as a baseline:

I was thinking it may be thermal throttling, that is why i asked about temps. What about usage ? Are you getting 100% on either CPU or GPU usage ? It could simply be that the game does not require all of the available CPU to run the game at that point in time....

at idle nope, its at a nice 10-20% usage most of the time but i do see in task manager its at 4.86ghz while in cpu-z its at 5000mhz

and in game... its around 80-90% and the game is pubg.

the temps still seem to be fine at around 55-70

around 40 -50 degrees celcious is my idle, and im using a water cooler ML 240

CPUz and task manager can give conflicting numbers. CPUz is fairly accurate so I think you are hitting 5GHz at load. Couple of things that may just be to do with your configuration, my idle CPU usage is around 6% to 10% and that's with Youtube running in the background and my typing this very response to you on Tom's Hardware...It would be interesting to see how many things you have starting up in the background by checking Start-Up in Windows Task manager..

Also great to know your CPU cooler..

So long as you are not living in a very hot country and your ambient temps are not high, 40-50 degrees C is a bit too high so I would look at the ML 240 AIO installation again...The ML 240 is not bad and should be able to handle the temps..Possibly worth trying to re-seat the ML 240 with new thermal material like MX4 or any TIM you have to hand..

i have google chrome running, discord, bullgaurd, logitech gaming software, nahimic 2+ audio driver, msi afterburner, cpu-z, core temp, steam, nvidia experience and steelseries engine 3.

Okay I finally understand why your temps at idle are higher....You have a fair few programmes running in the background so your temps at idle might well be correct....So I could be wrong on my initial assessment...

so you are saying i should lower the amount of programs starting with my pc?
but do you know why it still loweres to 4.7ghz right after the usage goes around 70-80%?
and btw my gpu idle usage is 0-1%

I think you are okay as in CPUz, you do hit 5GHz.

To double make sure everything is working as it should, download and run the Prime95 version 26.6 and do the blend test and at the same time have Hardware Info open to monitor the CPU speed and temps...This will tell you very quickly whether everything is working as it should and will show your CPU boosting to 5GHz...If it is not, then there may be an issue...

With regards to programmes in start-up, that's really up to you, I always disable any start-up programmes that I don't need...

okay thanks, i will check and tell you what i see.

okay thanks, il try to find a solution.

ive turned up my voltage to around 1.56 and now it seems to be working perfectly
the test is running as im writing this.
