I just built my first pc and everything is on,but my gpu came with a 6 pin connecter with 2 white connecters attached to it. W

Test if a single eight pin will connect. It will only connect if it is designed to do so.

That's an adapter with 2 molex ends and a 6-pin in case you didn't have a 6-pin coming from your PSU.

Normally your psů should have an output cable that has 6 pin and a small 2 pin attached to it.

What's the brand and model of the PSU? If the PSU has an output cable with a 6-pin or (6+2)-pin PCI-E power connector on it then use that. If your PSU doesn't have any output cable(s) that have a 6-pin or (6+2)-pin PCI-E connector on it then that usually means the PSU's +12V rail is too weak to power a discrete graphics card that requires any PCI-E supplementary power connectors.

I's the msi r9 290x and my psu is the cx 600.

The Corsair CX600 comes with two (6+2)-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors. You don't need to use any of those "6 pin connecter with 2 white connecters attached to it" adapter cables.

That PSU should just be sufficient to power the MSI Radeon R9 290X.
