From:
7600gt 256
3800+ single core
2gb PC2 DDR2 800 (6400)

To:
XFX 8800gts (320mb)
4800+ x2 (on sale for $59)
2gb PC2 DDR2 800 (6400)

So what do you think? It ran me a total of about $130 after selling my old hardware.

I know it's not top of the line stuff but can I expect to run games decent at 1440x900?

Seems like you done pretty well there.

Got the new graphics - great card - and a decent CPU to reduce any chance of bottleneck there.

Will be good for gaming at that resolution.

2GB is not enough, get 4.

The old g80 8800gts is a little weak, ideally, you should have gotten the g92 8800gts, which performs far better. It's still good enough though.

Not true and 2GB is enough under XP.

Task Manager -> Commit Charge (K) -> Peak

You won't see that go above 2GB with gaming, assuming you don't have a ton of stuff running in the background.

If your running Vista then 4GB.

I will end up with 4 later on when I upgrade to vista.

I got this card for a really good price otherwise I would have picked up a 8800gt or 9600gt.

After a few hours, Crysis itself will use 2+gbs. Add OS and background programs, and there won't be enough to go around. Of course, Crysis is a more extreme example though.

Thanks a lot.

I do plan on getting more ram, new hdd and Vista. But that's a few months from now.

Seems like you did your homework. Considering you out of pocket expense, I'd give it an A.

Not bad. It should do okay at 1440 x 900. That's about where CPU limitation disappears. The 8800gts 320 is a bit old, but not bad compared to 7600gt. It depends on the games. It won't play Crysis well (what does?), but it will do medium to high in most games out now.

I went from a 7600gs to a 3870x2 (the same CPU, I just moved it from an Nvidia 405 chipset board to the cheapo 690V -- what I'm really waiting for is Deneb on AM3). I'm CPU limited at 1280 x 1024, but I'm saving up for a 24" LCD. That 3870x2 cost me $449 the month it came out.

How often do you upgrade CPU's?

RE: CPU limitation, that is not true for all games, especially at 1440 x 900, which has roughly the same pixel count as 1280 x 1024 and is generally considered a CPU bound resolution. Many games can benefit from a faster CPU even at 1680 x 1050 high details, I can attest to this as I have a 8800GTS 320 myself, and I've tested performance in games at the default E4400 speed (2GHz, similar to a stock X2 4800+) and at 3.33GHz and many games showed an increase in framerate, though there were some (like FEAR and STALKER) that were heavily GPU limited (especially with the 320MB VRAM) and showed little scaling. Performance scaling should be even more pronounced at 1440 x 900 with the lighter load on the GPU.

In regards to Crysis, a 8800GTS 320 should actually run it pretty well at 1440 x 900 at medium/high settings. It starts running out of steam at higher resolutions due to the small VRAM but 1440 x 900 is actually just about perfect for 320MB.

1st time in a couple years but because this was such a small amount of $ I plan on upgrading it again in about a year...along with a mobo.

At the current price of the X2 5600+, I'd say you're better off just overclocking the X2 4800+.
