Ok, thanks anyway. 🙂

This followup is really just an excuse to post a status report, since
the RNG has been smiling on me lately. First, I finally found some
gloves on a soldier in Sokoban. In fact, I found two pairs, one of
them blessed +2.

I also found a bag. A bag of holding, in fact, dropped by an orc two
levels down from Minetown. I promptly went back and blessed it, then
marched on.

On the next level down, I suddenly found I now had a tame invisible
black light named Slinky. Oh dear! I leashed him and led him to the
up stairs, where I left him while I fetched everything I had that
could help me find the polytrap I knew was there somewhere: a potion
of confusion, two scrolls of gold detection, a crystal ball and, just
in case, a ring of polymorph control.

Taking Slinky up the stairs and leaving him there, I went back to look
for the poly trap. On the way, I also walked into a magic trap, which
luckily only drained my Pw. I also met a bunch of monsters, including
a red naga that, dying to my daggers, left behind a long sword named
Sunsword! (No fire resistance from the corpse, alas.)

That was a rather nice coincidence, as the level was unlit and I'd
forgotten to bring my lantern. Thus rearmed and illuminated, I
finally managed to find the polytrap with plain old searching. (I'd
tried the crystal ball, but it exploded the first time.) I then went
back, fetched Slinky, and, after killing one long worm that got in the
way, managed to drag him back to the polytrap.

I saved the game two turns later, with my invisible gray dragon named
Slinky on my leash.

Amulets
j - an uncursed amulet of reflection (being worn)
Weapons
g - a worm tooth
M - an uncursed war hammer named Mjollnir (alternate weapon; not wielded)
Q - 10 uncursed orcish daggers (in quiver)
S - a rustproof +1 long sword
Y - a dagger
Z - a long sword named Sunsword (weapon in hand)
Armor
a - an uncursed rotted +0 pair of speed boots (being worn)
b - a blessed +2 leather armor (being worn)
c - an uncursed greased +4 small shield (being worn)
d - a blessed greased +5 elven leather helm (being worn)
e - a blessed +1 robe (being worn)
f - a blessed +2 pair of leather gloves (being worn)

I noticed my spells of magic missile and healing have just expired.
Fortunately I have the books in Minetown, so I can go refresh them at
leisure. Not that I really _need_ them, but...

I'm also noticing that being stealthy and invisible, while very much a
good thing as such, makes having reflection much less fun. I mean,
how can I enjoy zapping monsters with their own ray attacks when they
keep _missing_ me all the time!

Search search search!

The search command ('s') is very powerful, just so tedious that
it's only used as a last resort. ;-)

While that trap was magical, a trap that drains your Pw is
called an "anti-magic" trap. And that's all an "anti-magic"
trap will do.

Having a permanent light source (albeit range two squares
instead of the usual three) is nice. (You can see mind-flayers
*just* before they get into melee range. ;-)

Very nicely done.

You can also use the polytrap for:

- any other pet you tame, immediately convert a lowest level
kitten
- Leading strong monsters to it in the event of an emergency.
("The mumak polymorphs into a mouse! It's afraid of
itself!" ;-)

Remember, only three reads per spellbook. You'll want to save
the last read for just before the ascension run. (How you
arrange for the spell to expire then is left as an exercise for
the student.)

Playing "chicken" with an expired spell, holding off refreshing
it so you'll have it later, adds excitement to a wizard's already
interesting mid-game experiences.

Life is hard. ;-)

I seem to recall testing out a pair of boots by stripping naked on the
Quest level (naked smelly Valkyries - woot!) and going for a walk on the
water. I wasn't using coloured tiles at that point, and never realized
that some of the }s were water, and some were lava...

Drowning of my own stupidity while all my stuff was lying just out of
reach scared me away from lava for a looooong time.

I didn't realize vortices could drop you in it, though - that makes fire
much scarier. Fire has always been an exercise in hitting the space bar
to make it past all the fire elementals not being hurt by the fire...

So you've got a pair of boots for every occation - is this even more
prepared then the artifact weapon for each species? Actually, this has
been very interesting reading, even if I have to get up early for work
tomorrow. Thanks for the pointers ;-)

I was hanging out with the cool kids in rec.games.roguelike.nethack when
Little White Mouse got out a spraycan and scrawled the following:

You mean you stop levitating after you leave the air plane? I don't
take that ring off until the portal appears inside my bubble on water -
and frequently I forget and don't switch back to =oSD until I spot how
close Famine is.

There is a much more reliable solution to that: yrivgngr. You will never
even hit the lava.

Heh. Actually, I cross air on the back of a silver dragon about a quarter
of the time...

Anyway, yes - I think better with my feet on the ground. I'm not worried
about bouncing around in the air due to Newton's 3rd. Once I've killed
everything nearby (e.g., on the level), then I float on.
