The fan of my Dell Dimension 4550 has died. The price that Dell requests me
for one new they are 110 euros (134 $ ) The fan is a JMC /Datech 9232-12-
HBTL-2. Is a right price? Where I could obtain a compatible fan for Dell
Dimension 4550?

Best Regards.

Yes, that's a ridiculous price, all because the fan uses a unique 3-pin
connector, compared to the usual industry standard 3-pin. And many Dimension
4xxx and 8xxx series machines will not boot up unless that fan is detected and
spinning at the right RPM.

Yes, anyone know where fans with this connector can be obtained at a fair market
price? I have a Dell 4400 hulk here in need of a similar fan.

This fan is one of the many pain-in-the-ass gimmickes now used by Dell to lock
people into using EXACT Dell spare parts and nothing else. Other gimmicks are
the non-standard front panel connector (for LEDs and on-off button) and the
non-standard connector for the cable to the front panel USB... Ben Myers

Very simple - you can find the same part number fan at one of the big
electronics houses -- Mouser, Digikey, Newark, and simply splice on the Dell
connector.

The original price has to be a fiction - in the US, Dell sells the fans for
about $7 plus shipping.

I'll willingly pay $7 to have a professional looking result and so I don't have
to mess around doing the splice.

Europe is much different than the US vis a vis prices for both new computers and
all manner of parts, generally more expensive. $134 is surely outlandish by US
standards, but Dell may operate with completelt different business practices and
policies in Europe.

Actually, I suspect that the Dell fans have a unique part number, as an
indication that the connector is the Dell 3-pin type. At least that has been my
experience chasing down proprietary part numbers for other brands.

But, hey, I'll check out Dell for my needs in parts... Ben Myers

FWIW, I called Dell spare parts yesterday and told them I needed a cooling fan
and shroud for a Dell 4400. I was told the cost would be $14 and change plus
shipping for a total of around $23. The assembly arrived today, which is pretty
damned good service. The Dell part number for the entire assembly is D1592,
both on the packing slip and stickered onto the green shroud. The fan is a
Datech part #0925-12HBTL. I think the price is reasonable given the specialized
nature of the part, and the overnight service is awesome, just like my
experience with IBM. (I mention IBM because I have as high respect for IBM as I
do for Dell. Both make quality computers compared to the other name-brand
purveyors of computer junk.).

The fan for the 4400 and the 4550 ought to be the same, even if the shroud is
different... Ben Myers
