i need help ASAP

hi there,
i have a WD My Passport Ultra external hard drive here, need i plug it on my pc or any other pc, it starts to click and then shows up normally but if im putting any form on data or format it, it will click again

Run the WD Diagnostic software to check the drive.

a click usually means the drive is dying best to backup any inportent data on it and run the diagnostic software on it

What you describe MAY be a power issue. This is a USB3 device, and it comes with a USB3 cable and no separate power supply system. All its power comes from the USB3 port you plug into.

The unit also claims it is "USB2 compatible". What that really means is that it CAN communicate with a USB2 port, BUT to do that requires that you arrange for adequate power. The USB2 port can NOT provide enough power to operate this device - only a USB3 port can provide that much power. So, IF you are trying to use it with a USB2 port, OR if you are trying to use it with an older USB2 cable, the drive will not work properly. Typically when used with inadequate power (such as on a USB2 port) the drive will light up, spin, and appear to be OK, BUT it actually can NOT read or write anything. That sounds a lot like what you describe.

To test for this, make SURE you connect the drive to a USB3 port using the cable that came with the drive. See if it works that way.

One other thought drawn from the WD website for these units. Sometimes even though you have a true USB3 port on your machine, the device drivers for it are the wrong ones (maybe USB2 drivers) and they don;t work. Check to be sure you have proper USB3 drivers installed for your mobo USB3 port.
