I currently have a amd fx 8350 and I want to upgrade it. I know that I can’t upgrade the cpu at all that much because of the socket (am3+). I have wanted to go to ryzen but that only supports ddr4 and I want to keep my ram so do you know what motherboard and cpu I should get for a budget build

Games I mainly play

Csgo

Rust

Scum

Arma 3

—-Computer Specs——

Motherboard - Asus M5A78L-M/USB3

Asus Gtx 970 turbo oc

AMD Fx-8350 4ghz 8 core

Hyperx fury 16gb ddr3

1tb hard drive / 120gb ssd

Solution
There's no cheap update unless you consider something like this cheap

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor ($165.98 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Gigabyte - B450M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($74.88 @ OutletPC)
Memory: Team - Vulcan 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $330.85
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

You could opt for a 4790k/z97 purchase but you'll still be stuck on several year old dead tech

You pretty much have the top AM3+ processor. Either be lucky and get a cheap, better FX-9000 series CPU (probably can't get them in stores anymore), or I'm afraid it's almost impossible to get a cheap upgrade.

Edit: Yeah, no, there's no cheap update. A kit much like Supahos is suggesting is pretty much your only option.

you could also go with an older intel processor. even a 3rd gen i5 will outperform the fx8000, i believe. and you can keep your RAM. not sure what this would cost brand new but you can definitely scope a deal on ebay, possibly even a combo deal. thoughts everyone?

I've looked at old stuff before. You could do something like this.

Upgrade it using your ram, not sure if your 970 would fit though. A gtx 1060 or 1070 mini should though.

I would also replace the PSU if you intend to put that 970 in there. I don't know what PSU you have in your current system, but I suppose you could carry that over.

That said, within the next couple of years you'd be looking to upgrade I would think.

I was lucky to score a similar unit my work as we are upgrading some older systems. I got one with an i7 3770 for 50 bucks. So I'm fixing it up for an office PC for my wife's home office. I bumped the system ram to 16gb, and tossed in a 500gb SSD. I also installed an EVGA 600 bronze PSU I had left from my system when I upgraded to a 750 watt PSU. For her system that PSU is complete overkill.

I will say, the system I picked up runs very fast from what I can tell and think it would be a very good budget gamer with something like a gtx 1060 6gb or maybe one of the upcoming 1660ti cards. But as I said, that system might get you by for now, but in a year or so you might be looking to upgrade.

Keep in mind there would be no USB 3.0. So if you need that feature you might need to add in a card or something.
