Question I need help troubleshooting my ATT internet speed ?

Firstly, when I previously did a speedtest it originated in Illinois, and I'm in Indiana. Now it's in Louisiana and I don't know why. So i wonder if that could be the issue.
My internet speed was 700 but now it's 188 ETHERNET connected. If i disconnect the ethernet cable, the wifi speed is 217.
When I use the ATT app on my iphone and do a speedtest, it says the Wifi Gateway is 533, but speed to my iPhone is 288. Now this is wifi. So I don't understand why the Wifi gateway is higher than the speeds I'm getting.

I have ATT Air internet, that's all I can get at the moment. And it was working much better...with speeds around 500 to 700 (although I know not the same as fiber speeds)
I have reset the router and it has not helped and I downloaded the current Realtek LAN driver from Asus and it didn't help.

I did buy a tp-link PCIe Network Adapter but I'm thinking now that it won't fix my problem as my iPhone is also having low speeds.

Any help appreciated.

Life is much more simple when you have a fiber connection to your house.

I am very surprised you ever got 500-700mbps on a mobile broadband connection. Most times people are happy with a couple 100mbps if they even get that.

To many variables outside your control and ability to even see. This is still a wireless connection and subject to signal loss due to pretty much everything. Water vapor in the air..ie fog.. for example can greatly affect the amount of signal that is being lost. Then you have the added complexity of the what other customers are you sharing the att tower with. Do they also have mobile users driving by in cars sharing the same bandwith. Your test results could change from second to second as cars move in and out of range of he tower.

In the end you can do nothing about this. Maybe place the router in a window on the side of the building nearest the tower....assume you do not already have a out antenna connected.

Maybe something you just don't worry about. Other than wanting a bigger number on speed test does it really affect you. Large bandwidth only really matters when you do massive downloads. If you download say 100gbyte microsoft flight simulator game a faster connection can save a lot of time. BUT how often in a day/week/month are you doing this. Most people can get by with just 100mbps connection. You could watch 3 different 4k netflix movies at the same time as well as surf the web and play a online game and still be under 100mbps of usage.

All depends on how much file download you do.

Key is more bandwidth does not make most thing run "better". They only use the bandwidth they need and ignore the rest. This is why a cable company can sell 1gbit connections to 200 people on the same physical cable when their actual cable does not even do 10gbit. They know most people never really use the bandwidth the pay for.

I'm also losing my connection to the printer , repeatedly. I have a lot of lag on my computer. I did the speed test through ATT app and also on my PC using Ookla.

I have a lot of lag. I can't play Second Life., which is a game. I do realize there are a lot of variables, but my printer can't stay connected, and that is a big issue, and the printer is right next to the ATT router.

I just tried to print something and it said there was no printer on the network. 15 minutes later, the printer does print it. So what is causing that. It showed no signal on the printer but not it is showing it's connected.

Sounds like you have multiple issues. It all depends on how you have things hooked up. Are you using ethernet or wifi for your pc and/or printer.

In general online games should never be played on any kind of wireless. If you are using your pc on wifi you now have 2 radio connections that can each take interference which is the cause of lag in games.

Your printer should function even if the internet is down. If you have the printer connected via ethernet then I would suspect a problem with the printer itself.

I'm using an ethernet cable for my pc to the router. I can print from the printer if I hook it up to my PC with a printer cable.

You likely have 2 different issues.

Your PC Is connected via ethernet so wifi problems will not affect it. The traffic between the printer and the PC do not use the internet connection. It should work even if you disconnect from the ATT network. So your printer problem is not related to ATT and your lag problem is not caused by wifi because you are using ethernet.

The problem with the lag in your pc unfortunately is likely because you are using a mobile broadband connection. Mostly it is online games that get lag from any kind of wireless connection. Online games do not really care about having lots of bandwidth but they need a very high quality data transmission. Mobile broadband and wifi have all kinds of issues with interferece and are fundementally poor choices to play online gamse on.

If you are seeing slow response time on say a web page try to disable IPv6 and then hard code the IPv 4 DNS to be 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1. Neither of these change will have any impact on game lag.

But the wifi icon on my printer goes to No Lan. Also web pages are lagging as well. ATT fiber is 2 streets over but they have no idea when they will come this way. Crazy, and I live in the city. Thanks for the help.

This seems to confirm that the problem is the wifi adapter on the printer. Changed to a wired connection and see if a difference is made.

How many, total, devices do you have connected on your network (wired and wireless)?
