Whats your budget.

If money is not a problem, for Max Intel build, then you'd want :

i7 965
GA X58 Extreme or EVGA X58 Classified
Cosair DDR3 2000mhz 6gig

2 x HD4890 or
2 x GTX275 or
1 GTX295 or
1 HD4870X2

Those are pretty much the max Intel spec you can get.

For that price, you could do low end i7 build if you stretch your budget to $1000 or go with quad AMD build at around $800. It is not worth it to go with socket 775 now, simply the cost of the Q9650 is more than a i7 920, and no new processors will come out for socket775.

However if $500 is the starting point then a good option would be :

E8400 Microcenter $140, Newegg $168
Asus P5Q Pro, GA EP45-UD3P - $120 - $140

For video card, crossfire HD4770 is very attractive right now. Crossfire HD4770 would be better than 9800GX2. 2 x HD4770 $200

Quality PSU - Cosair 750W or PC P&C 750W, both around $120

Xigmatek Dark Knight $40 - should be plenty of cooling for a dual core.

Round up the rest of your items and price of system would be around $800

I agree with the build flyin15sec suggested (except that the PSU is an overkill, 600w should be more than enough, unless you think of upgrading in the near future), the CPU-GPU-Mobo combo represents the best bang for the buck, and the sweet spot of price vs performance..And you'll find alot of good 4Gb dual channel kits of RAM for around $50.
BTW at what resolution you'll be gaming?
