Hello there, i decided myself to buy a console, but i don't really know what to choose so i was thinking you guys could give me some advice.
First of all, i am not a hardcore gamer, i would like to have fun and enjoy gaming experience online. I would also like to watch some movies on the console, put on some pictures maybe play some music, and browse some internet pages if verry needed. I am would also like to take the best decision considering the hardware of the consoles. Overall i would apreciate a lot if you guys could give me some tips that would help me taking a decision.

First of all, by console I'm assuming you mean computer. Normally "console" refers to standalone gaming products like the xbox and PS3.
What do you mean by gaming online? If you're talking about simple flash games, you can get something very cheap, but if you mean stuff like WOW you'll need a little more. Please specify. Also, what's your budget?

I have all three of the major gaming consoles (Wii, 360, PS3) and of them all, I personally enjoy the 360 the most. I started as a huge Nintendo kid growing up, graduated to the PlayStation when Final Fantasy VII came out, and moved over to the Xbox for Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire, so I have history with them all. The PS3 -- with its built-in blu ray player -- probably has the most power and is actually a lot more afforable now. Unfortunately, its recent online "issues" are a major black eye (in addition to Sony's ineptitude in dealing with it) and they have few exclusive titles (though the ones they do have -- God of War III & Uncharted, to name a couple -- are ridiculously good). Also, the PS3 is almost like a PC in its interface and build, and has the best pure web-surfing abilities, but if you wanted a PC, just buy a PC, right? The Wii... I won't bash it, because I know quite a few people who love it, but I never got into it. The controller kills it for me. And the quality of its titles veers more towards the younger gamers, whereas I have a taste for the dark and bloody. Which leads me to the 360, which has a reputation as the "hardcore" gamer's concole. True, that tag was well-earned about three years, but the 360 has evolved and now has a very nice suite of utilities (Last.FM, Netflix, Facebook, ESPN), is relatively easy to use, has an awesome online experience and dedicated community with Live, and tops it off with just a sick library of games. I heard 3D is in the works for it this summer, too (should work with most newer systems, I read), so that's one less thing PS3 has that the 360 doesn't. That's just my opinion, as someone who has actually spent time with all three. Whichever console you choose, have fun!

For consoles I have to somewhat agree with 7dragons grew up with coleko then Nintendo series then playstation series then xbox series personally I would go to the Xbox microsoft and affiliates are trying to aim higher than sony cuz sony beat them to the punch with the ps3 but right after xbox came out with basically the same stuff for hardware in their machines I would push you over to the xbox side but it really depends on what type of games you want to play and if they are available on the console you want to get. Whatever your choice the choice to game is a good one. In the end its all what you want out of your console and what games you want to play.

You mustn't use your PS3 too much if you think it only has a "few exclusives"... But that's another topic entirely, and I don't really want to start a console war. I do own all the consoles as well before you ask.

Also, the network hacking could have happened to the 360, and Xbox Live just as easily as it did the PS3, and PSN. It's just Sony pissed off the hackers so they targeted them. The network is up and running again too, plus all PSN users will be receiving compensation in the form of 2 free games, and a free one month (30 day) subscription to PS+. I wouldn't say it's much, but it's something...

@marean

For what you seem to be wanting, imo the PS3 would suit your needs more. It has the bonus of also functioning as a blu-ray player for movies, it has a pretty good U.I especially for music and pictures, there's Netflix for T.V shows/movies (on 360 as well mind you), it has an internet browser too (which the 360 I'm pretty sure doesn't have), and online play is free. The PS3 also has quite often been touted as more powerful than the 360 (I don't really want to get into the specifics of what's inside each of them), which judging by the best looking games on either console, I would agree with. Others may argue the other way, but that's just how I see it.

The only advantage I see right now is to the old ps3 owners that get a little compensation back and that online is free ...I was thoroughly pissed when I unpacked my ps3 and found out that the network was hacked and sony would not admit it till 2 weeks into it just bad customer relations there but again thats for another thread. Plus poster_boy did not mention that the 360 also has blu ray in the new versions....they cheaped out the first series to get ahold of the "console" industry to put them back on top but sony was smart and released the first series with the blueray and the usb ports on the ps3 is also a great add on for their box

Yea Sony handled the whole hacking thing really, really poorly... When did Xbox start using Blu-Ray, I haven't heard this yet (which is odd, as I follow everything to do with the games industry really closely)...?

When they put out the third series it came with the blu ray player.
After months of rumors and denials, the XBOX 360 with a Blu-ray disc drive is due to be manufactured soon and shipped in Q3 of 2008. Pegatron Technology, an OEM subsidiary of Asustek Computer, is reported to have received the winning order from Microsoft for a Blu-ray equipped XBOX 360.

Earlier reports cited Lite-On as the company with the privilege of building the new console for Microsoft. Lite-On is also currently one of the suppliers of the internal DVD drive fro the XBOX 360.

One of the strong points for Sony’s Playstation 3 has been the integrated Blu-ray player. The PS3 had the ability to draw both gamers and audio/video enthusiast, and this was proving to be a major advantage over its XBOX rival. It is estimated that 85% of Blu-ray players in use are PS3s. Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer had admitted that Microsoft had been working on support for Blu-ray under Windows during this year’s Mix08 conference. Rumors began to swirl and many began to expect Microsoft to announce a Blu-ray peripheral for the XBOX 360. This article is on this site it was from 2008 and any new xbox you can buy now has blu ray.

sorry not to double post but only the first and last lines are from me the whole middle part is copied from an article in the news tab of this site. just want to clear that up

I'm 99% sure that those rumours never came to fruition, and that the current 360 does NOT use blu-ray. I have not seen one mention of it anywhere, or from any of my friends who own the new-model of Xbox. If it did in-fact use it, it would be plastered every where, but it's not...

CVG has an interview with Microsoft Xbox and Entertainment's Stephen McGill, who has made it clear that digital media is the future, and not Blu-ray discs.
Says McGill: "We have no plans to adopt [a] Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment started last autumn when Xbox 360 became the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies."

Microsoft has seen some pressure of late over the low capacity of DVD discs in comparison to Blu-ray, especially after Capcom said it had to cut content from the upcoming Lost Planet 2 on the 360, because of the lack of space.

The developers of God of War III recently said the game could most likely not be made for the 360, as it used a good amount of the 50GB multi-layer BD.
Well it seems you are totally right and i say sorry for any miss leading on my end...I was 99.8% sure that it did but it doesnt. also googled this some sites say that there is xbox 360 ready blue ray players you can get then I saw this article...from this it says they are mot even planning on it and they are looking past it. Thx for getting me to research that...I have told a couple ppl that it has it...ahhh ill have to retract my comments and admit I was wrong.I HATE THAT!! but thats life.

Funny, you telling me it did caused me to look it up too (though I was pretty sure it didn't even before you mentioned it), and I found nothing about it having it, I just didn't feel like citing articles haha 😀

Anyway, we've derailed this thread enough now lol.

yeah got on our own little rant didnt we.....and about citing articles I just read the jist and yeah copy past but it was a good one and it was from this site but go to another site and it says the opposite, obviously, but I did say that post was from 2008... anyways personally I like the xbox better. there that was easy! but if you need or want a blu ray then you got to go with the ps3

Man, I feel like I looked away for a second and Viper and Poster decided to have a party without me. How dare you both! :kaola:

In response to Poster_Boy: I never intentionally try to give out faulty info, but you were definitely correct in calling out my "few exclusives" comment. I did a little research on it, and the number of console exclusives between the 360 and PS3 is practically a wash. That's my bad, and thanks for keeping me honest!

At this point in the game (pun intended), you really can't go wrong with either the PS3 or 360. Both have their good and bad points, and both have some functionality that the other doesn't (though that gap is narrowing every day, it seems like). My personal preference of the 360 stems from my love of RPGs. Back in the day of the PS & PS2, Sony cranked out more and they were awesome titles. Then you started to see the balance of power shift to the Xbox, slowly but surely, and my affections shifted also. That's not saying the PS3 sucks, and the 360 can do no wrong -- anyone who has played on either system knows you can't generalize like that. It just means that the 360 has more of what I personally want right now. Tomorrow? I hear Sony is already working on the PS4...

I know we got out of hand....personally I think what you said and how you described it was great....still havent heard from marean on this haha!

sorry for the late reply from me, i had some work and did not have time to get on the computer. i read all of your opinions and i am still between this two consoles. half a year ago i almost bought myself a xbox360, i don't really know why i didn't bought it, now i wish to buy a console again but i don't know why i am so undecided. my cousin has a ps3 and he doesn't relly like it, i spoke with him a few days ago and he said he would liked the xbox more. but i still am undecided

i have one question for you guys. if i have an usb hard drive full with pictures and music and movies, could i conect it and play them from the xbox360?

Yes you can the xbox has 3 usb ports which will read your hard drive or another method to transfer pictures and stuff is to ftp it to your x box

Let's not forget that the Xbox also has Kinect, which the PS3 can't match at the moment :) PSMove is similar, but more like a Wii controller to be honest.

i think i will go for the xbox360. it seems that it offers the fun i am looking for online gameplay. so, one more question. if i am in a big hurry, and really want to search something on the internet will i be able to browse some pages? (youtube/google)

Yes, it supports flash which means you can watch most videos on the Internet, including YouTube. It has in built google support. The only bad thing is the controller is hard to type with at first, but you'll get used to it :)

Didn't get the letter I sent you in the mail then eh :ange: You missed out :kaola:

And no problem :)

@Viper
Yea we got a little out of hand

Just to add, as Dragon said, you can't really go wrong with either system atm, so just go with whatever you feel suits you best :)
