I am very close to purchasing a new computer. I want an AMD 800Mhz Thunderbird processor, 128 pc133 ram, 20 GB HD, ATX case. I am a little confused as to which video card and motherboard to choose. Somebody please help me out!!! I want a fast video card, like TNT2, geForce, or geforce 2 and a motherboard that will be perfectly compatible (i heard the asus A7V is good, but i was looking for something a bit cheaper if possible). I also read that there are compatibility issues between geForce and athelon processors. Does this apply to thunderbird processors? Please recommend something compatible and the least costly, Thanks.

What I really want to know is, what video card (preferebly GeForce) and what motherboard would be the most stable togather? Or do they all work well together?

Well AMD is definately the route to take. The Asus board you mentionned is actually the A7V. It is one of the top 2 AMD boards out there now. I personally prefer the Abit KT7. You won't need the RAID option with your setup, but the regular KT7 is an awesome board. Easy to setup with the soft bios and well made. It will cost you about $120 though. Check pricewatch for current prices. As far as graphics, a good value card is the GeForce2 MX. You can get decent ones for around $112 and they should run 3d games and other apps well. If you want to spend a few more bucks, go with the GeForce2 GTS cards. I have an Asus V7700 deluxe (video in/out) and I love it. about $190 w/o video in/out, $222 w/ video in/out.

Found this place with Pricewatch -> www.sg3d.com , they sell the Leadtek Geforce2 GTS with video out for 179$ !!!!
and the Leadtek Geforce256 with DDR for 139$. Tom had a very good opinion of these cards in the graphics guide.

Shouldn't be a problem with GF2 and boards made after July 2000. I would recommend the ASUS for stability but the ABit for ease of overclock. GET MICRON (crucial.com) MEMORY! (think there is currently free shipping) I recommend the 30 or 45 GB IBM 75GXP HD because it's so fast. Get a good heatsink and USE THERMAL PASTE! A guy at work wondered why his 1GHz Tbird kept crashing while he installed his OS (every few minutes). No thermal grease! Leadtek GF2 (also have a super GF1 too) card with TV-out (retail) is about $185-190 shipped (look at pricewatch.com) Enlight 7237 case w/o PS (cheaper shipping) and get a Antec PP303 PS from Onvia.com (free shipping) and you'll be set.

Sharky Extreme recommends the Gigabyte GA-7zx as a good value motherboard. Geforce2mx seems to also be a good value.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends...

I have seen quite a few complaints about the gigabyte board on this forum. I would stick with Asus or Abit unless you look into it some more.
