Question I thought it was CPU overheating... but now I have no idea ?

About a week ago, I began experiencing a sudden lock up, hearing an audio error in my headphones like "eeeehhhhhhh" and a shut down. It would send me to the pre-bios screen and hit me with a "CPU Temperature Over Error!". So before making a thread, I looked around, redid my thermal paste, reseated my cpu cooler, tightened it down better etc.

Well, it continues to happen, except now I don't get sent to pre-bios and i see no errors, it just locked up, black screen and reset the pc. No errors this time. Nothing.

My fans SHOULD be set up properly too. I have two in the front as an intake and one on top and back as exhaust. Did the napkin test and everything.

What could be the issue? What am I missing?

use hw monitor https://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/hwmonitor_1.52.exe

keep that open play a game for like 15 minutes. close game check max temp that was recorded by cpu

also are you doing the pea method or spread method for applying thermal paste the whole ihs must be covered not a small area.

other things to note the supported speed of the Ryzen 7 5800X is 3200 on the ram

So I did just that as well. Forgot to mention, my apologies.

CPU never passed 70c. I played for a few hours and didnt even see it go passed 62c if im honest. But i use 70 as a rounded guess, I suppose.

I spread the paste myself, last time i tried the pea method it didnt work out too well.

Do you think the ram could really be the issue? I could have sworn that after a bios update it could go higher, especially if bios allows it.

Something I may notice as well, or a coincidence, is that it happens when i have 2 twitch streams open. Even on separate tabs.

if its straight up crashing i would assume it could be a the culprit

go into the bios look for default settings and save it and exit this will remove xmp see if it keeps doing it after that.

ryzen chips can be a bit funny with ram speeds not all are equal.

even if your board says it can do 3600 etc that doesn't necessary mean the chip can as its official support is 3200

ram speed isnt a issue i run cl 16 3600 on all my ryzen 5000s the 5800x3d as well

then your lucky my previous CPU wouldn't go past 3200mhz without it boot looping same thing happened to a previous gen

ive owned ryzen since series 1 /3/5 all had memory issues or simply just hated a particular ram kit.
This also started happening randomly. If it was a speed issue, it would have happened when I got the kit which its been almost a year now.

would you have any ideas?

can you get into the bios ?

update bios if you can !!

use ddu on gpu and reinstall gpu drivers update windows if you can ..

what psu are you using and how old is it ??

Ram sticks could be a issue but i doubt its the ram speed

clear cmos

the noctua NH-U12A is cooling my 7800x3d as i type this so the cooler is not the issue

stupid question but i need to ask the plastic film on the bottom of the cpu cooler removed ??

Everything seems to be working okay so far. I noticed after all the updates and the driver reinstallations i had a 4 degree drop which is interesting. I also got a new 120mm fan for the top of my case because the last one was stock garbage from the case and saw another 5 degree drop.

For now, ill mark you as solution and reference this thread in a different post if anything else happens. Thanks so much for the help!

I thought this was taken care of and locked the thread, but it happened again just a moment ago.

Nothing has changed aside from following the advice of some of @ilukey77

Another question: Could a failing HDD which is NOT the M.2 my windows installation is on, have anything to do with the entire system crashing? I was hearing some sounds coming from one of my drives that sounded like mechanical skipping possibly.

It also seems to only happen when playing Destiny?? Granted its kind of the only game i play for long periods. Played WoW for a few hours as well and nothing happened.

Otherwise im out of ideas. Please help.

Take a look at your windows update history. If you installed KB5031816 or KB5031445 around the time this issue started you may want to consider uninstalling them.

I ran into an issue where my completely 100% stable for daily use PC would lock up every 10-15 minutes right after these updates. Uninstalled them immediately and the problem went away.

You may want to look into EVENT VIEWER and see what errors or warnings are popping up.
I noticed I had a few WHEA warnings and I reset my previously stable under volt up a little for the 2 preferred cores.

sounds like your windows os is faulty

it does sound like a faulty driver in the windows os itself so i would back up your game folders on a seperate drive any important info and do a clean install.

other things to try is going into your antivirus and putting said games it happens to into exceptions
