its just to confirm that he is the owner of the system.

I know it was for good intention, but it's not the best way for him to solve the issue, and we should not be the one to judge whether those are valid ID or not, anyway.

How would knowing his name allow you to know it's his system? Or that the auctioneer isn't fencing stolen goods?

Even if he bought it, he said it's 'from auction'. Which means that the person who auctioned it could have stolen it. It's a very murky legal area.
