I have a dell computer and I do survey work in an office environment. We use carlson. I live a few miles from my office and sometimes I need to do something on a job at an emergency level. I want to be able to connect to my server that is at my office from my home to do the job for convenience.

Solution
You have a couple of options. The Carlson Software user agreement allows you to install the software on a second computer for home use or a laptop to take to the field. You could then just bring the job home on a jump drive or copy it over to the laptop.

I use and recommend TeamViewer to connect to a remote computer. You could do the work directly on the remote computer or use the file transfer and copy the file over then work locallly. For more information and great deals on Carlson Software you can visit my site at www.surveyorcentral.com
Have your IT department setup a VPN connection to the office. If you don't have one, you can setup a program like LetMeIn on both computers to logon to the office one remotely. If you only have the laptop and need to connect to the server, you need to make sure someone sets up the VPN and server access properly or you can just end up with your server being exposed to virus attacks.
