if you buy using your ( register first ) email address at mojang.com, then there is no problem and you can play anywhere in the world
if your son has his own email address, use that rather, and remove your credit card details afterwards

Technically you can play minecraft for free as long as it is offline without an account. If you plan on playing with other people, then you will need to buy an account. You can find a list of servers online, but I would advise you to pick a server that is close to you, because it will result in less lag. Here is a sample list of servers, there are tons of websites for this.
