I got it to work, but it just opens a folder for the desktop. I want it to show the desktop itself. I am not interested in spending any money. I managed to make this work on an old computer running windows XP home, but I need to know how to do so in Windows 10 on my new computer.

Solution
Hello, I use a shortcut to the desktop from my task at all the time, it's already there!
If you go the the bottom right of the screen and click, it will take you to the desktop. This method is really quick as no accuracy is required, you just have to drag your mouse to the very bottom right of your screen and click!
That simple

Solution

1. WIN + D
or
2. Right click on the Taskbar, 'Show Desktop'
or
