I want to get an i7/i5 Intel core cpu for my PC but I don't know if my motherboard supports it.

I want to upgrade my pc for gaming, my graphics card is amazing which is an MSI Radeon R9-280X but my cpu is an disappointing Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8300 and I wish to upgrade that. The problem is that I don't know if my Acer EG43M motherboard supports an intel i5 or i7 cpu. Please help me as I don't want to waste around 200$-400$ on an cpu that my motherboard does not support. Plus the cpu I have now is giving me an pain in the ass.

I did a bit of research and found out that my best option is the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Quad-Core Processor But im just wondering if this is any good for gaming (High-end or Mid-end). Also changing the motherboard sounds like an hassle to do but I will consider it and would you recommend me an motherboard for the i5/i7. But I think im gonna try the Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 Quad-Core Processor. Please tell me if this cpu is any good at gaming. Please

my son is gaming with a 7 year old computer - an overclocked AMD Phenom II X4 980, the CPU scores nearly 5000. We are going to replace it next year

Hardly anyone needs an i7 processor, especially not for gaming
If you want to get more features on your motherboard, consider a H97 or Z97 mobo

I guess, i might try an Gigabyte H81 HD3 Motherboard with an i5, but are you sure cases are not important? Do I need an specific case (Sorry im new to this) My computer is like 8 years old with I guess an pretty decent case for its age.

Cases are pretty much standard. I recently built a new PC in a 12 year old case...
Try it and see, if it doesn't fit, a new case can be had for $40
