I want to swap CPUs in Dell Inspiron 660 from i5-3330 to i7-3770 - Need help!

Both socket models are the same so it does fit the motherboard. But make sure the chipset for the current CPU installed is the same for the i7. What im seeing i believe you can upgrade the processor BUT it also might not work. If the other thread is speaking about i7 is not optional. Then i would look for a good i5 product for what you are looking for

What would be a safer bet that is similar to the i7 3770?

This is a qoute straight from a Dell Service Tech off the Dell Forum asking the same question, If you look at those forums you will find the same question asked and answered several times. The board technically should be able to run a i7 but Dell never released a Bios update to support them.

The Inspiron 660 does not support any i7 processors, only i3 and i5, 2nd and 3rd generation processors.[/qoute]

Its better to stick with the i5 Processors. Just to be safe. There is still a wide selection of processors that will fit your requirements. It would be a different story if you where rebuilding the computer ( Motherboard for example )

According to Dell's own documentation that system was only available with the i5-3330. Dell BIOS locks the processors, so literally the only processor that would work on that system is the i5-3330. You have no upgrade path unfortunately other than building a new system.

Your not going to find a used system with a i7 and a 500W+ power supply for under $300.

There are plenty of these but you will need to update the power supply

Dell-Optiplex-9010-Windows-7-Prof-i7-3770-3-4GHz-16GB-320GB-DVD-RW $110

It uses a standered ATX design but you will need to pull the motherboard to upgrade the supply as there is a fit issue. Youmight also have to watch the GPU clearance and at worst cut to make room.

Do you know of one that wouldn't require removing the motherboard to switch the power supply? And one where the GPU would fit without issue?

Would the one I posted above fall under that category?

Very limited funds vs $320 for just the CPU+ MB+ RAM?

Picking up a Business end machine with a i5 or i7 for under $150 and swapping the PSU + GPU is pretty common and quite effective for really low budget gaming if you happen to have a GPU to start with.

Dell OptiPlex 790,990,7010,9010 "MT"
All use a basic ATX PSU
Cases are larger enough to house most decent sized GPU'S and can be modified fairly easy for larger ones.
Have options for i5 2400 to i7 3770
8g-16g RAM
250GB- 1 TB Hard drive
Small SSD's sometimes
GPU.. nothing worth listing here low end basic
Win 7 and 8 or upgrade to 10
Price Range from $95- $320
