Yes you can, even the newest GPU will work on your systems.
But considering the old i3 performance, there will some bottleneck with a powerfull GPU.

Thank you for the response. I think everything may just have to be upgraded as in build a new pc. I was afraid that my GPU is now beginning to have problems because my other monitor keeps turning on and off.

i5 gen 3 will give a better experience, and you can get i7 gen 3 for max upgrade. And of course with a good GPU, they still good to handle some game these day.
