I am currently in the process of gathering parts for a new build which will be constructed in early July. The aim of the system is to be used for gaming but on a budget of £600, so therefore there has had to be some limitations made. The proposed build content can be found here... http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/D7FT4D

(The motherboard in the picker list is not permanent, as is not the RAM, as it will depend on the processor DDR3/DDR4 on what is purchased. If anyone has a better budget GPU then please suggest below, as well as any other components. I already have 2x Samsung 640GB 7200 HDD)

The problem I am facing is the choice between two processors: Intel i3-6100 or i5-4460
The i3 is limited to being only Dual-core, however runs at 3.7GHz and supports Hyper-threading
The i5 is a Quad-core but is however limited to 3.2GHz and does not support Hyper-threading

i3-6100 ... http://ark.intel.com/products/90729/Intel-Core-i3-6100-Processor-3M-Cache-3_70-GHz
i5-4460 ... http://ark.intel.com/products/80817/Intel-Core-i5-4460-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_40-GHz

Benchmarking: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-4460-vs-Intel-Core-i3-6100#performance
(Came out with similar scores)

The machine will be majoritively used to play CS:GO which is a CPU intensive game (however will be played with some of the lowest settings to max FPS).

Please feel free to reply with any queries on the above and I will reply ASAP...

Solution
If you're specifically designing the system for CS:GO the i3 will perform faster. If you are also looking to the future to include newer games the i5 would be better. It's really that simple. If fps is what you want you'll need a good 144hz. monitor to see them. If you're using a 60hz. monitor then all frames after 60 fps are discarded to virtual neverland and all you're doing is creating tons of GPU heat for nothing.

Will be getting this 144Hz in July so it will be worth it: http://benq.co.uk/product/monitor/xl2430t/

It looks like a good monitor. It comes with a DVI cable. If you want to use HDMI or display port you'll need to buy the cabels. Just a heads up. :)

go i3 it will eat an i5 or i7 or amd my stepsons running a i3 in a haswell & hes nailing everything online i am stumped myself for the price its worth it benchmarks arnt tru results testing in a tru game is where u will know i reommend i3 hands down

Got 100's sitting in the garage xD

Is the GPU in your sig. better than the one I have on the partspicker list?

Would this be worth it? https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KPRWB9G/ref=psdc_430515031_t2_B00LV8TZLU
Or would the cheaper, faster i3 still be a better choice?

yeah same opinion here i3 for the price & preformance goes way harder & under rated the benchmarks arnt as much as once ur gaming or doing ur intensive workload i5 dont use hyperthreading where i3 do i rather than than core count & turbo boost

The Devils Canyon i5 is truly a great CPU from Intel and can handle any game you throw at it. It beats the i3 in single core games with a turbo speed of 3.9Ghz. and it can be overclocked to 4.5Ghz.+ It will also future proof you more than the i3. If you can afford and i5 the 4690K or 6600K would be better than the i3.

Would having this chip not leave my GPU bottlenecking the whole system, as the CPU is a lot more powerful than other components in the system.

And also, if I was to buy a cheaper Quad Core i5 and overclock it, would this also be viable? Something like this -> https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00JIJUBAS/ref=psdc_430515031_t3_B00KPRWB9G

You wanna stick with DVI specially if you're going for 144hz monitor.
Pretty sure HMDI cable is limited to 60hz?

Ah thank you! Forgot that, always presuming HDMI is the best cos it is used for everything xD
