Hey guys,

I'm trying to get my i5 2500k up to around 4.2/3 GHz. My mobo is an ASUS P8Z68-V LX, and I've got a Zalmann aftermarket cooler (keeps my stock 3.3GHz i5 at 30C after about 20 minutes after closing Total War: Rome II. Max I've seen it go is 43C after some BF3, although my Antec 300 loaded with fans probably helps).

I've got an HD7850 GHz edition, but I play a lot of Planetside 2 and Total War: Rome II, which really require the CPU to work hard. I'm CPU bound in PS2, getting about 50FPS in large battles.

I have the EZ bios with the GUI, and I know my way around advanced mode, but I'm unwilling to play around with the bios until I get help from you guys :) Never OCed before, how do I go about it to the clock speed I'm looking at whilst mainting stability? The more detailed an in-depth the answer/guide the better 😛

Thanks guys!

Overclocking a 2500K on Z68 isn't that difficult unless you're taking it to the extreme. Find a decent guide online and just try your luck at it. At those multipliers, I'd reckon your voltage should be around the 1.3V mark give or take. Remember to stability test your overclocks afterwards and see how the temperatures change.

What's the best way to test stability?

Prime95 small FFTs for torture testing, HWmonitor or similar for temps, CPU-Z for specs and windows task manager for core by core performance monitoring. Any overclocking guide should have all this covered.
