Just looking for your opinion and thoughts.

The difference between these two processors is only 0.1 speed, the L3 cache and the i7 has hyper-threading.

Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz
Intel Core i7-2600K Sandy Bridge 3.4GHz

The i7 is 100 dollars more in price.

Is hyper-threading that important for performance?
If so, will the performance be noticeable between the i5 and i7?
Is it really worth spending a 100 more (1/3 more in price) for the i7 cpu?

I couldn't have said it better myself.

The $220, I5-2500k is 50% faster than the i3-2100 ($100 less) and has an unlocked multiplier. That is worth $100.

A 10% speed increase for $100 is NOT worth it.

Diminishing returns.

+1 agreed.

back to what i say, after few weeks u probably think, darn i wish i add another 100 bucks, i got the top line of i7 hahaha

I would say get the i7.
No matter what budget.

I always had kinda of something different about it.Such that even though i buy the best bang of the buck i feel that in the end i should have bought best performing cpu.

I am the opposite.

A year later, when my $300 cpu (or its performance equal) is selling for $90 , I alway feel like I threw $200 away. Never felt like I overspent on a $99 part.

My E8400 is $179.99 at Newegg today. Moved $10 I think. History suggests that for Intel, Falcon, it's not going to drop very much at all. I'd get the i5 too because I don't want to feel like I threw away $100.00 NOW. UNLESS that $100.00 buys you a feeling, as other suggested, that is worth it to you. I don't go to Atlantic City or Vagas. That feeling, for example, is not worth $100.00 to me.

Edit: I take that back. for Vagas et al, it's worth $100.00. BUT who spends Just $100.00 lol!

The difference between the Intel® Core™ i7-2600K and the Intel Core i5-2500K really come down to what you are going to be doing with the computer. If you are looking to game with the system without question go with Intel Core i5-2500K. The reason why is right now with games very few of them will take advantage of more than 3 threads. Because of this the hyper-threading on the Intel Core i7-2600K has very little value in gaming. That leaves the difference between the Intel Core i7-2600K and the Intel Core i5-2500K at 100Mhz and 2MB of additional cache. Not really worth a $100.

Now if you are going to be doing some audio/video creation or some other heavily multi-threaded appication you will find that the differences between these processors do make a difference in preformce in those types of solftware.
