Hello, I recently received a new i5-3570k from intel after RMA my 3 year old 3570k. That CPU was never overclocked and was causing a lot of bsods (first time the CPU has ever gone bad on me). With this new CPU I decided to buy a Noctua NH-D15 and try overclocking out.

Following the Asus ivy bridge overclocking guide by SWAG at overclocking

Following that guide I have gotten to a stable 4.8 ghz at 1.2 volts and max Package temps of 72 Celsius. I have a screen of HWMonitor and CPU-Z during a custom prime95 test using 90% ram and I ran it for 8 hours.

I looked at other peoples posts and noticed they needed much higher voltage to get a stable 4.8 OC. So my question is am I doing something wrong and is it worth it to try and push this chip farther to 4.9 or 5.0?

Solution
72C is as high as you really want to go for a full time overclock. I'd say you did a great job and call it a day. A nice first effort. Now scrape together another 670 and you've got it made!

Awesome, I will just keep it there then, thanks for the help! Is doing 2 670s in SLI worth it or would it be better to just save up for a month and buy a gtx 980?

Well, that is entirely up to you, I suppose it really depends on your monitor resolution. A single card is always better but Im sure a 670 can be had for a lot cheaper than a new 980 and offer similar frame rates in most games @ 1080P

BUT, one card is always easier than two. Some games have been using more than 2GB of graphics memory so the 970/980 can become a lot more appealing.

If you have the money yes by all means do it, the two 670's can't quite keep up in most games.. If you are a little shy on cash, the performance jump from one 670 to two would be worthwhile, especially with the low price you can pick up a used 670 for around 120.

If it will only take you another month to pull together the cash for a 980 then go with that, there is really no chance of being disappointed.

Awesome, thanks the input! I think I will save for a 980 this month then the month after get a 2560x1440 gsync monitor. Do you know if its a good time to get one, or do you think monitors will be dropping in price soon?
