i5-4670K and i7-5960x is it worth it to upgrade i won the i7 from intel

Basically I won this i7-5690x from Blizzcon last year.

Currently I have:

i5 4670k
Msi z87-g45
GeForce GTX 770 OC2 4GB 256-Bit GDDR5
8Gb - G.Skill Ripjaw DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900)
EVGA SuperNOVA 750
CORSAIR Hydro Series H90 High Performance Water/Liquid CPU Cooler. 140mm

I have not overclocked anything yet.

The I7 is still in the box, while the x99 boards are pretty high still and having to buy new ram I wasn't sure with current games if its really worth the mobo/ram upgrade yet.

It's $1000 chip and your not sure if you should spend $300 to get it up and running. Either sell it or run it, leaving it in a drawer just lets it loose value as time ticks on

its not the price, its the difference between the two chips. If its worth the $300-400 for gaming or if just spending money on a newer GPU is a better move for the same price right now with what games require.

Id sell it and then spend the money on a new GPU, more RAM and an i7 4770k / i7 4790k if you can find one. That would make your PC last for a few years, and give better performance in newer releases such as BF1.

An upgrade to a GTX 1070 or 1080 would show a much bigger improvement than using the 5960x.

For raw gaming performance, I wouldn't expect the 5960x to do much better than the 4790k you're currently running, since it's generally single core performance, like IPC and clock speed, that matter most. Now if you said you stream with friends to twitch at 1440p60 with some lossless audio and skype video calls going and background recording for archiving and highlights videos, you'd see a nice bump in performance all across the board.

That GTX 770 probably won't do it much justice, nor would a "measly 8GB DDR3" ram (everyone seems to be saying 8gb isn't enough anymore for gaming, i question this though).

but keep in mind it's going to be more than $300-400 in upgrading. That 5960X really likes DDR4 ram, and the more the better. I'm building a system for that very cpu, and i've ordered everything but the cpu and some additional ram (decided to go 64 GB) - but i'll be into this build about $2900

but as amtseung said, if you're into doing all that stuff simultaneously, that's a helluva workhorse of a cpu, if not, sell it and use the coin to upgrade your existing system and still have some coin left over for hookers etc

I bet some crazy guy out there would gladly trade you that CPU for a car or something equally crazy. One of my friends traded his $1k bicycle for a $3.5k car back when we were in high school, so, who knows?
