i5 4670K extreme overheating

Hey guys, I just recently build myself a new gaming pc, and I have had some troubles with it. When browsing the internet or playing a game it completely shuts down, like someone pulled the plug (it seems that there is no consistent triggers to these crashes).

Later on i started getting some BSOD with the following error message: irql_not_less_or_equal. So i began checking my hardware for malfunctions and i quickly discovered that my CPU was extremely overheating.

I am using the stock cooler provided by Intel. I know, not optimal, but i needed to earn some more money before i bought an H100i.

When running Memtest my CPU temperature would hover around the 90-95 and one core reaching 100 degrees celsius... AT 30 % LOAD! I used RealTemp to monitor the temperatures and Taskmanager to monitor the load.

At idle it is generally in the area of 50-60 degrees celsius.

So my questions are, is my crashes related to my overheating CPU? Or is it software related?
And have i got a faulty CPU chip, or is the stock cooling just not sufficient enough?

My specs are:

CPU: Intel Core i5 4670K
MoBo: Asus Maximus VI Gene
GPU: Asus GTX 770 DirectCU II
Ram: Corsair Dominator Platinum 8GB
PSU: Corsair AX760
Storage: 2 x Samsung 840 120 GB in Raid 0.

irql is normally a nvidia driver issue. CPU overheating doesn't normally cause shutdowns (it merely downclocks alot to prevent damage, slowing down games). The CPU overheating is not good. You don't want CPU's going over 70 degrees. Don't buy a H100i, just find a cooler like the Hyper 212 evo with an 1150 bracket (I think 1155 cooler work with 1150 coolers because they use the same bracket, correct me if I'm wrong), and it'll be quiet enough and effective enough.

If you're idle temps are 50-60C the CPU cooler isnt installed correctly. Take the side panel off and try to wiggle the cooler. It shouldnt move at all.

Pull it off and reset the tabs
Lay a pea size drop of TIM in the middle of the CPU
Install CPU cooler
Press thumb down hard on center of Cooler and press legs down in an X pattern. Dont be afraid to use pressure. You wont break anything.
After install look at back of motherboard. The grey tabs should be all the way through. if they're not uninstall and try again

Okay, I see. I will look into the driver issue and reconsider my heatsink choice. And yes, 1155 bracket will work with 1150. Thank you for your respons. My temperatures are now way lower than before, because I reinstalled my heatsink, so thats great. And i haven't had a BSOD yet, so... Fingers crossed..

You're very welcome. People are afraid of breaking something so they don't secure it correctly.
