Hey, what do you reckon of this build i just chucked up? http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/3anCS (note: will be replacing the cooler with a h80 i can get cheap!)

Fair enough.

For the build you made, I wouldn't take the Extreme3. It's only got a 4+1 power phase, not really suitable for overclocking. 4+2 would be the least I would consider, 4+2 would be good for a decent overclock, and 8+2 or above would be optimal. Unless you're going quite high end ASRock's AMD boards aren't that great.

I'd rather take a 990FX build with another board. Like a M5A99(F)X, GA-990FXA-UD3. If not, then a 970 board such as a M5A97 R2.0 or preferably a GA-970A-UD3.

Putting a 4670k in the build I linked would be kind of pointless. You need a Z series motherboard to be able to overclock the k chips. You can grab a Z87 Pro3 for around £70 I think, but that would push it over your budget again. I believe it has a 4+2 power phase so you could get a decent overclock out of it.

Not sure if you're aware but the CPUs come with a heatsink, so you don't need to add one separately. They are sufficient for the CPU at stock speed. Just wondering why you were adding one. 😛 It's always nice to have an aftermarket one though.

Games and software are rapidly moving towards multi-threaded code paths and once that happens, an FX 8 core will really begin to shine. Intel won't be a slouch by any stretch, and I can't say AMD will outperform Intel, but the disparity between the two will be virtually non-existent.

Because i will be adding the h80, so i thought i'd just put a random cooler in the build. Haha. Many thanks for help today, really appreciate it!

The intel is still ahead 😉 It is noticeable in some games, thankfully BF tends to be well optimised for most processors. And when running 680s in SLI you're not really gonna see a difference. But of course, when you're past 60FPS it doesn't matter. The scenario you outlined is one in which you are far above and beyond that. As a side note, when I say 'worse' I don't attach that kind of a negative connotation, implying it's garbage - it absolutely isn't. Great chips, but the intels do tend to perform better.

The fact is, games are still being released where single-threaded performance like the intels is important.

As for the pricing, it's odd in the UK. Frankly, I'm not quite sure why AMD is so expensive here either. In the UK there's not really a price premium for intel so I would pick it every time for the better performance.

Swapping to the 4670k would be pointless in any of the intel builds. Wrong board. 4670 would perform slightly better (you wouldn't notice the difference, but the computer would). The only reason to spend the extra 12 quid difference between the 4670 and 4670k would be if you had originally went with a Z87 motherboard instead of the H87. Again, they cost more. What you are going to have to decide with an Intel system is Am I going to OverClock? Ever!?. Once you solve that, the choices in chips/mobo will be easier and less confusing.

Wow, you guys really have got me thinking about this one. Haha, i was quite happy with this build earlier ; gigabyte r9 270x 4gb windforce
WD Caviar Blue 1tb -
Corsair Builder series 600W 80
Zalman z11
Corsair Vengeance 8gb
Corsair h80
AMD FX8350
Yeah, would leave me £20 to splash on games after a decent mobo too... but 😉

I'm not going to get into this argument, as I'm sure you don't want to either (case and point, the thread a while back with pajitsu sadff  ). I don't see multithreading taking off for a while. Moreover, it will always be necessary to have good single-core performance, the load is not spread across all cores equally. Unless engines are released like the Cryengine masterpiece I see the intels still being ahead (I realise you said that you can't specifically say AMD pulling ahead, I appreciate that). IMO for most of the games out there I don't see why you wouldn't pick intel esp with the pricing here in the UK.

Once again, I appreciate that you put across your points respectfully 😛 Quite often I get screamed at. I sincerely hope that multithreading takes off to allow AMD to be directly on par or ahead of intel, but I think it will take quite a while to do that, at least until my next CPU upgrade. I simply stated 'wrong' on my comment as I didn't care to debate what seemed to be a blatant paste of what the person heard from someone somewhere one time on a tuesday.

It's always a tough call between amd and intel - and lets be honest, none of us knows what the future may hold. 😀

Of course. But from my own experience and observations, intel has been better in this current generation. Even in games that utilise the 8 cores of an FX, a 4 core i5 can match or beat it. From what I see intel will continue to be better as multithreading isn't going to instantly take off. When it does, the i5 may well still be ahead as single-core performance will always matter.

I've probably overloaded this thread with posts so I won't carry on this 'argument' unless something someone says really grinds my gears. 😛

Yes, IMO. You won't need a better cooler unless you're overclocking. It seems you're interested in the AMD CPU side heavily though, so you may be wanting the cooler for an overclock. I don't see you needing more than 650W 80+ Gold for a 280x.
