I'm planning on upgrading my pc soon and i don't know if i should just upgrade my cpu to an i5 4690k or get a new motherboard a new set ram and then get a kaby lake-s processor. the 4690k is around 230 and a kaby lake-s processor would be around that or a little more but i would have to spend money on a new motherboard and set of ram. so i guess what I'm trying to say is would i get better performance from the 4690k or the newer i5 kaby lake-s processor. i will also be getting a gtx 1070. oh and is a 600w psu enough power for all this.

Solution
There would be no reason to get the K version of the 4690 as your motherboard cannot overclock it. If its only choice, it makes no difference really.

The performance gains on the CPU between a 4690 and a random kaby lake I5 are not worth the money you pay for the extras - http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-7600-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4690/3890vs2311

CPU speeds haven't changed a great deal in last 3 years on the Intel side, they have been optimising other areas. This is bound to change.

motherboard - asrock h97m anniversary edition
cpu - intel Pentium g3258
ram - g.skill 2x4gb 1600mhz
psu - corsair cx 600
hdd - western digital caviar black 1tb
windows 10

and i know my motherboard is a piece of junk but it gets what i need done. if i got a really fancy motherboard would that give me better fps in video games?

if i got a motherboard that could overclock the 4690k would there be a noticeable difference in games

oh and do you think an 4690k and gtx 1070 is a good match or will they bottle neck

Overclocking should increase frame rate for the 1070, just upgrading to a quad core over your dual core now should help there as well. You will need a better cooler than the stock heatsink on the 4690k to overclock it and keep temps down.

if you buying a new motherboard and CPU you might as well get a kaby lake system as ram is the only difference between planned systems then. Then it comes down to which kaby lake CPU you want then as to what performance gain is over a 4690k. http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-7600K-vs-Intel-Core-i5-4690K/3885vs2432
