Alright gents, It's that time of year where I normally go hunting, but due to a lack of pick up truck anymore, I had some extra cash squirreled away to upgrade my last Frankenstein PC project.

I am upgrading to an i5 6400 with a generic HP motherboard.

I know you guys will tell me to buy other stuff, but honestly, I am a bargain bin ranger, and if I can buy a refurbished computer with somewhat new technology, I will. I have a 1000 Watt corsair PSU, about 16 GB of 1800mhz DDR3 RAM, and I have it slaved to a 32 inch Panasonic Viera television for gaming.

Anyhoot, just picked up an HP Envy with an i5 6400k, and it comes with the crap integrated gpu, but again, that is not an issue as I currently have an r9 380x I've been using since January. I just want to be able to run Fallout 4 like I was meant to without having to drop my resolution down to 1600x900 to play in boston reasonably. I mean, the current rig isn't too terrible, I can play GTA V on medium at 1080p with FXAA and MSAA off, but the A 10 6700 is just too slow for me lately.

Solution
The real-world benefits will vary from task to task, but in terms of raw processing power, the i5 6400 is just about twice as powerful as the A10. There's really no tuning to do, just plug it in and go.
To answer your question, an R9 380x would be a good upgrade and probably achieve what you're looking to achieve, but it's probably not the best value right now if you're buying new. I would suggest one of the new generation of cards, such as the RX 470 or 480, or GTX 1060.

Also, do you already own the 1000w unit? You really only need 3-400w for your proposed configuration.

So. I have the r9 380x, 4gb from sapphire. I have a 1000w Corsair PSU, though its 6 years old, i have 2 blue ray burners for external media. I want to know how much performance switching to the it 6400 will give me, and what all else i can do to further tune it. Last intel system i had was an i7 970x...

All I'm doing is looking for a decent cpu upgrade from the dated piledriver technology thats not gonna bottleneck the gpu i have. I picked up i5 6400 system for 180 that I'm transplanting parts into.
