Hey all. I am currently looking to upgrade my system but only have about 500$ for my first upgrade.

I currently have:

An i5 6600 non k
H110ma gigabyte motherboard
Gigabyte gtx 970 oc to 1415mhz/+480mhz vram
8gb 2133 ram
750w gold psu
An ssd with windows and hdd for games

I have about 500$ to upgrade now. So i basically have to choose between upgrading my cpu/mobo or gpu.

What should i upgrade first and to what? The ryzen 5 3600 is 270$ here in canada so i should be able to upgrade to it including a new mobo. Or i can pick up an rtx 2060 or a rx 5700 and wait for a cpu upgrade. There is also a sale on a vega 56 for 370$ at canada computers. I was also considering a ryzen 5 2600x but not sure if its worth it at 210$. I also hear they dont perform well in csgo which is the main game i play. I can also get an i5 8600k for 250 cad + tax. I7 7700 prices are ridiculous. Even used ones are going for 350 on kijiji atm so not sure if its worth it.

I mainly play csgo but am experiencing some stuttering. I have a 144hz monitor and am pushing 144+ fps with older gtx 970 drivers but the experience isnt the best due to some stuttering. With the newer gtx 970 drivers i couldnt maintain 144+ fps. I am also open to buying used but would prefer not to. Another thing to note is that my gpu fans make a scratchy noise and have been for a few months so idk how long it will last. I also play pubg sometimes and am looking into newer fps shooters once i upgrade.

Any tips on my first upgrade would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Add in your current GPU and other hardware, and you have a solid upgrade path, and a a system that will be much better and smoother than your current one.

Your current ram is possibly causing the FPS drops. With only 8gb once your ram fills up it starts using the swap/page file. This can cause the FPS drops you are talking about.

Do you think the 2600x is a worthy upgrade? I just want more stable frames in csgo and to future proof my system. Thanks for your opinion btw :)

swap 2600x for 132 dollar 2600 oc to 3.9 easy on stock cooler, gpu should be fine for cs

Yes, over what you have, and what you can do with the system, absolutley.

You will have great experience. I've a 1600x, and the 2600x is abour 5-10% faster. The 1600/2600x are awesome gaming/streaming CPU's.

It will feel like night and day between the two CPU's, specially for CPU demanding games.

You would be going from a 4c/4t CPU to a 6c/12 CPU. The extra CPU resources alone will give a really smooth gaming experience. As will 16gb of fast ram (which a Ryzen system will love)

See if you have other processes occupying CPU resources. I will try to resolve current issues before considering upgrades...

Again, I don't necessarily disagree, but you can look at all the backround tasks all you want here. The issues, is older 4c/4t CPU, Ram amount etc. The OP will just keep running into issues with newer games. Sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and upgrade, rather than being dissatisfied with an older (just about capable 1080p gaming system) which causes pain in gaming terms.

Mark, I have a i7, 920, that's old and I play Battlefield 5, Battlefield 4 etc. It so handles armed 3 and everything else. The two Ssd drives are great and I think the mobo is a x58. The only problem is everything is sata2.
