i know the i5 8400 is cheaper and better than the i5 7400 but that's the problem. I just want to upgrade my cpu. Should i buy a new motherboard just for the i5 8400 ($300) or should i just keep my current motherboard and just upgrade to i5 7500 ($200) ??

Solution

Check here for an approximation: http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-7500-vs-Intel-Core-i5-8400/3648vs3939
Again, it depends on the use you want it for. The 7500 is still powerful enough for most cases. The 7500 has 4 cores vs the 6 core 8400, so it would come down to your budget. Personally, I don't think that the difference between these two is worth a new mobo. If it does fit in your budget though. go for it.

because the performance on the i5 8400 is better especially on gaming. Should i just stick with the i5 7500? Is it still powerful?

when do you think the i5 7500 will become obsolete?

The i5 7500 is already somewhat obsolete for games like bf1. And upgrade a 7400 to a 7500 is a GIANT waste of money. For the extremely little improvement you are paying a lot of money whereas the 8400 might be more it will last you longer and be a bigger improvement than the 7500 in terms of single core performance and you get 2 more cores.

thank you so much for helping me!
