Hi, I got the MSI GTX 1060 6GB earlier and recently bought new mobo and CPU as I found that my old cpu was holding back the 1060. I recently got the i5-7500 and Asrock b250m-hdv with GSkill 8GB DDR4 2133Mhz memory. I use rivatuner with MSI afterburner to monitor my game statistics.

I get around 50-60fps in GTA V and sometimes it dips to 40 fps with ultra settings. I saw some benchmarks earlier and got to know that my setup could beat 60 fps and above in GTA V - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-core-i3-7350k,4932-2.html. I checked here and the i5-7500 with RX470 4 GB getting better fps than I could. Average is more than 100 fps and I could never achieve that.

Watch dogs(1) gets me around 50 fps mostly and frequently goes down around 40fps. The lowest I saw was around 30fps. That doesnt happen frequently though.

1) Btw, my max core speed I get is around 3.6Ghz while the processor is supposed to turbo up to 3.8Ghz. I suppose its lower cause of all cores running at the same time? I could achieve 3.8Ghz if a program is using single core right?

2) The max cpu temp that i noticed while gaming reached around 70c and mostly hovers about 66c. Is this fine?

Thank you.

1. You are correct.
2. That temp is fine. It won't cause throttling.

First off, what resolution are you playing at? If your playing with anything above 1080P, then that's what you'll get.

If you are at 1080p or lower, make sure ALL drivers are up to date, including graphics, chipset, windows, etc etc. Oh and update your BIOS.

If all that doesn't work. Go into your favorite GPU overclocking utility, turn the OSD on and see what your GPU load is in game.

Im playing at 1080p. All drivers are up-to-date. Just reinstalled windows. Im not comfortable updating BIOS, worried my board will be bricked. My current BIOS is 1.50. The latest is 1.60 which improves system compatibility and just released 6 days ago. My gpu load is around 90-99% mostly. Sometimes it goes aaround 80 too.

Your RAM might be causing some of that difference in FPS.

But that said, my i5 6600 doesn't get solid FPS in GTA V either. It's an ageing game that isn't particularly well optimised and is a massive cpu hog.

What fps do you get in GTA V? So the same goes to watch dogs too?

I don't have watch dogs so can't comment on that to be honest.

GTA goes into the 30's sometimes for me, though I generally hover around the 60+ mark, I would not say my FPS is stable at all, lots of dips.
I've tried at 1920x1080, 2560x1080, 2560x1440 and 5760x1080.

It's "playable" across all of them with my i5 6600 and gtx970, but the stuttering can be offputting. Your GPU however is better than mine.

Owh, sure, ill try this out. I "feel" my cpu should be fine for these games. Not sure though. If its RAM related, then I should add another 8GB or get a stick with higher frequency?

A RAM upgrade would in theory only net you 3-5fps for potentially $150+ so that would be better spent elsewhere, or more likely put to one side and saved for an upgrade.

I'm biased, I don't like my i5. I expected more of it, especially for what I paid for it. But it is seen as the standard for mid-high gaming.

Im having the dips issue too. Should be the optimisation issue as you said earlier. My issue is, I just built my rig and would like to know if my rig is performing as it should in games. Would you recommend me any well optimised game so that I could try it out and see if im getting the best performance out of it? I do have COD(most of the sequel), dying light, BF(3,4) and so on but not sure if its well optimised and I never try them yet cause im not having enough storage in my rig and would try them once im done with the games im playing right now. I would try to manage space and play a game(well optimised) to check if im getting the fps that I should be getting. Thank you.

Hmmmmm. So, its better to go for i7 if one is looking to get 60+fps with ultra settings in any titles?

i7 definitely seems to be the way forward.

I'm a power user, and a multi-monitor fanatic too.. I prefer to stream or record when gaming, and I like gaming at 5760x1080 (though the new build will possibly be up to 7680x1080, don't judge me I have a problem) so for me the extra threads are what I need.

I'm being frankly bloody stupid, i'm ditching my entire system even though 95% of it is less than a year old and blowing it all on a Ryzen 8 core system, but I want the extra computing headroom for my other uses, like I said, streaming, recording, 3d rendering, heavy photoshop and illustrator use etc.

To be honest.. The biggest jump you could make would be to get an Nvidia G-sync monitor. I picked up a freesync monitor and an old R9 290 in preparation for my AMD side-grade and the difference blows my mind.. The frame rate seems buttery smooth at 50fps, smoother than I used to get at 110fps in some of my older titles. G-sync is supposedly even better, though it does come with a price premium.

There's nothing to be worried about. Updating the BIOS is super easy. The only way you can brick your mobo is if you power off the machine during the install. Your going to have many headaches with future PCs if you don't know how to update the BIOS. Just warning you.

Hmmmm, then ill try to look around for G-sync monitor. Btw, how am i supposed to know if my rig is performing as it should in games since it doesnt perform as I thought in GTA V or in watchdogs?

If thats the case, then ill research bout updating the BIOS. Will updating BIOS improve fps? Btw, I might wait sometime since the BIOS release is still new and I could get to know if the particular version has any issues/probs without updating.

Sure, ill try other games and compare. Will update if the same thing goes on.

BIOS updates are exactly the opposite...95% of the time, new BIOS updates don't ruin anything. Waiting to update it won't do a thing. However, I'd check the internet to make sure that BIOS update is fine, if nobody has problems with it, your good to go.

Hi,
of course you need to play around with your setting a little... GTA 5 isnt like BF1 where you just set everything max. and it runns well...
from my experience MSAA in GTA 5 is really baaad, not only does it eat up fps like shit, but it also increases inputlagg aside from the inputlagg introduced with less fps, also postprocessing quality on anything higher than just "high" eats ut alot and so does grass.
So as someone using the same gpu id recommend going into the advanced settings, setting resolution scale to 1.500 (up the extended object distance a little aswell, dont go higher than 50% though) then just disable MSAA, set everything to max exept grass and postprocessing...
Keep grass at "high" and postprocessing aswell if you like your game to be perfectly smooth (about 80fps), if you want a little better shading set postprocessing to very high and activate depth in field, if you want that and more fps, oc your 1060, i got mine to 2088mhz max. on core and 4650mhz on memory (memory oc helps quite a lot btw) powerlimit and core voltage has to be maxed out of course.
And please, get another 8gb of ram... 8gb alone are pretty tight today...

LG Vinc

When I always change my PC's componets, I reinstall windows everytime because I'm getting weird framerate dips in absolutely all the games I play. Reinstalling the OS helps me at least... Hope I helped !

What if you live in an area where power is not stable? There are days where we lose power for a half second 3-4 times.
