Hi all,

I am looking at the Intel - Core i5-9600K 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor for use with an Unraid and Windows dual boot build.

My question is, this CPU is listed as "no simultaneous multithreading," and I can't find anything that says if multithreading (MT,) is required to virtualize 2 OS's. I can only find info that says to "be cautious" about MT usage.

Can this CPU handle virtual machines?

Thanks!

Solution
It can run virtual machines.
The amount of vms demends on what the vms do.

That cpu has no smt, meaning no hyperthreading. It has multiple cores that can run multiple vms, but only 1 thread per core.
Cores are more important than threads.

Having 6 cores and 6 threads is significantly better than a 4 core and 8 threads in most cases.
Hyperthreading only adds ~35% performance.

However, a 6 core 12 thread will be much better than a 6 core 6 thread for virtualization.
Id suggest ryzen since you get more threads which will be much better for vms.

A $250 ryzen 5 3600x will beat an i7 8700k and i5 9700k for virtualization, creative workloads, and games.
