i5 broadwell question

do I have to use ddr3L ram with this cpu or can I use ddr3 to as long as I stay with 1.5v https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/processors/core/i5-processors/i5-5675c.html

5th gen supports both DDR3 and DDR3L

DDR3 is 1.5V

DDR3L is 1.35V


6th gen is the one that dropped the 1.5V DDR3 for 1.2V DDR4 with 1.35V DDR3L as a fallback

if you look at the intel link I posted intel calls for ddr3L that's why I'm asking

That page is oversimplified and becomes wrong. DDR3L at 1.5V does not exist, the L means low voltage 1.35V In the datasheet I linked it shows both DDR3 1.5V and DDR3L 1.35V

You are good to go with DDR3 1.5V

DDR3L is dual voltage capable memory that can operate at 1.35V or at 1.5V according to JEDEC specifications.

Keeping the voltage at 1.5V or lower is to prevent potential damage to the integrated memory controller on the CPU.
