Hi
Son got an i5 processor last year, we bought a new graphics card and power pack to ensure it was okay. Is it wise just to buy an i7 8700 processor from amazon and get pc works to install it? Cheers
Don’t know anything else but the i5 works fine

Which i5 is it? The answer is almost certainly going to be no.

If it's an i5 8400 like I'm assuming, that is more than sufficient for any games he could be playing and you would see almost no performance gains with an i7.

Also, I would never suggest getting PC works to install anything, and especially something as easy as a processor swap. All it takes is $5 of thermal paste and 30 minutes of your time to swap a part like that assuming you're not completely clueless. There are tons of youtube videos showing how to replace things like that, I would suggest that you go to youtube before a repair shop to see if you're capable of doing it yourself.
