So I got an i7-3770 for a fairly low price less than $170, and I understand that this cpu (in the world of tech) a bit old now and skylake is just around the corner, so im concerned on how long can I use it for gaming before I need to upgrade it? How long will it still be relevant?

Solution
Those are still right up there in the upper echelon of gaming CPUs.

Pair it with a nice GPU and you'll get good mileage out of it for 2-3 years at least.
CPUs haven't gotten much faster in the past few years. I just recently upgraded to a 4790k from a 2500k I bought in 2011. And that was more about getting hyperthreading than to move to a newer model. I only did it since I got it for like $120 through Intel Retail Edge. Otherwise I would have been looking for a 3770k since it'd be compatible with my old motherboad. At the same clock speed, there's going to be very little difference between a 3770k and a 4770k.

Until games start needing 6-8 physical cores, you're going to be fine.
