Hi there,
A friend of mine recently upgraded his rig and gave me his old stuff.

I'm thinking of buying a new motherboard to house the CPU.

I currently have a i7-3770, and the new processor is a i7-4770. I've had a look at the specifications for both on the intel website, but their specs are almost identical.

Is it worth buying a new motherboard just so I can use the i7-4770, will I see any sort of performance gain? Specifically improvements for gaming.

Cheers!

You aren't going to see anywhere near enough gains on anything to warrant splashing out on a new motherboard for that 4770. You'll be just fine sticking with your current set-up. I'd just sell off the 4770 and use the money to upgrade my GPU or some large SSD's instead.

Not worth my friend.the 4th generation of intel core i7 cpu are not powerfull enough in single core performance if we compare this to the 3rd generation. In MMo rpg games and fps games u will have better perfomance with i7 3770.In my opinion if u play those type of games it will be a downgrade.BUT there is a big BUT here. The new generation(4th) is better in games like fc,ac,witcher, bioshock. Its your choice.Peace :)

Thanks for the help guys, I just spoke to a friend and it turns out I might be passing my old hardware down to them, and they'll pay for my expenses (the motherboard).

Is it worth upgrading to the i7-4770 if there is no monetary cost to me, or would I still be better off with the 3770 and giving them the 4770?

Basically, in a purely one vs. the other contest, would one come out on top?

Not sure if it's worth mentioning, but I'll also be upgrading from the GTX670 to the GTX770 at the same time.

Considering the hassle to buy a new motherboard and upgrade, I'd keep running it with 3770 unless you need some new functions on a newer motherboard. One of my main system has a 3770k, and I dont' bother to upgrade it to just 4770 or 4790 or even 6700/6700k of current stepping that has some bugs to work out still.

if it cost you nothing I would do the swap for one reason alone. the 1155 socket is dead/dying no new chips, no real future
the 4770 will get you a new socket with more upgrade paths, newegg has 118 1150 CPU's, and only 15 1155 CPU's. food for thought.

1150 is as dead as 1155, so switching from one to the other would still be a waste of money. The only upgrade that makes sense at this point would be a shift to 1151 and Skylake.

Thanks for the replies all. Since it's not going to cost me anything I think I might as well use the 4770. This way me and my mate both get an upgrade.

I probably won't be in the market for a real hardware upgrade until 2017, so this will have to do until then.

If u have a good gpu like gtx 960 yeah, and if u have the money i think you can buy good liquid cooling for extremely overlocking abilities + 4 or 8 gb ram (to have 12 or 16) if not no problem. But if u have the money i would suggest you a liquid cooling! :)
