Is the i7 4790 great for gaming compared to the i5 4460? No not really both will perform about the same in most games, the only difference between them is clock speed and hyper threading and since most games dont make use of hyper threading i7s usually dont perform any better than i5s, in fact sometimes i5s perform better. I would say its only worth it if you are okay with spending a couple hundred dollars for maybe a few extra fps in some games.

i have a 4970k, and yes it is great for my gaming. however, i'll agree with the previous posters. if you want to improve your gaming performance, your money will likely be better spent on upgrading your gpu.

The 90% of the FPS on games fall over GPU. If you have a great GPU your FPS raises a lot. then, if you are looking for better FPS and you have a great GPU, your option is that CPU. Based on many benchmarks

You have a strong, well balanced system already. The difference in most games between any i5 and an i7 is usually no more than a couple of FPS. The big jump is generally from an i3 to an i5/i7. Oh, and if you are speaking of Fallout 4 recommending an i7 - just wait until its released. I have a feeling Bethesda's developers didn't spend much time on that recommended specs list and when actually reviews show comparisons between different hardware there will be little if any difference (between an i5 and the recommended i7).
