My friends i7 4790k Started restarting randomly last week. No bluescreen just hard power off and reset. CPU was not overclocked it was running its stock boost 4.4ghz.
Build right now
i7 4790k
Evo212 Cooler
MSI Z97 PC Mate (Also Have a gigabyte Z97-HD3)
MSI GTX970 Reference Card
16G 2133mhz DDR4
Samsung Pro 950 120g SSD
Things I have tried
1-Swapping the PSU
2-Reinstalling windows (Got Stuck with it resetting or Blue Screening During windows install for a long time before i successfully got it to install)
3-Updated Bios and all Drivers
4-Swapped for Different RAM
5-Swapped Hard Drives
6-Disconnected Everything and Ran the Boards on a box (This is when i started to think processor is bad)
7-Swapped the Gigabyte Board for the MSI Board (Didnt work got stuck blue screening and resetting attempting to install windows again)
7-Clocked the CPU to 1.2V @ 4Ghz With Turbo off and seemed to be stable. Ended up resetting after a Hour. Temps Maxed at 75c
8-Used OC Genie to see what it would recommend and see if ti would be stable Crashed immediately on desktop.
9-Currently Sitting at 1.07V @ 3.8Ghz Appears to be working for now.
Starting to think this chip just went bad. May attempt to RMA it back to Intel. The CPU is only 15 Months Old. Started Happening to him about 2 weeks ago and i got it more frequent over time.
Sorry for the Formatting of this post. I use the forums all the time for little problems i have and i have gone through all the threads i could find on this issue and everything has led me to believe its the CPU.
Thanks in Advance!
