Title says it all should I buy an i7-4790k now or wait for the equivalent i7 "skylake" cpu to be released.

Solution
In my opinion, your current plans are still good. THe thing that's most disappointing about the current Haswell line (i7 4790k) is the temperatures compared to older generation i7/i5s. It's more of an issue to keep them cooled under stress. Nothing like the high-end AMD processors, but still...

I doubt that Skylake will remedy that, unless Intel makes drastic alterations to the chip architecture.

I have heard that some of the VRM moves off-die, and that may help. If that is a concern to you, then you may want to wait, otherwise I see no real compelling reason to defer.
Do you need a new cpu now or could you afford to wait? Skylake CPUs will be a little faster and maybe a little more expensive. They will need new motherboards and maybe DDR4 memory (which is more expensive than DDR3). If you're just waiting because you want the latest, then know there will be successive generations. I always tell people to build or buy when they need it, because the 10% or so performance increase won't be that noticeable. And Intel has no financial incentive to produce anything faster and if they do, they will simply price it according to their current pricing curve.

I am mainly just curious as I am upgrading from my fx 6300 and was wondering on what peoples thoughts on it where. As of now I was planing on upgrading to the i7 4790k with an Asus maximus vii hero and 16gb of ddr3 1866mhz memory to go with my current gtx 770 sc w/ acx

The high temps are not to big of a concern for me as I am also getting a nzxt h440 which has a ton of fans plus will use my h100i to helf keep things cool. So I think I will pry go with current plans instead of waiting just to find out I will have to spring for ddr4 and premium new hardware on launch

With Skylake, from what has been shown so far with the VRM being put back into the hands of the motherbaurd, overclocking skylake will be a much deeper and time consuming task were Haswell is a piece of piss to get to where you wan't. If you are asking which one to choose, I would asume you are new to overclocking and therefore should go with Haswell. I would ,if I was intent on getting skylake wait for the refresh further down the track.

I have overclockled a bit I think I had my fx 6300 to 4ghz for a while but it is not 100% my main focus to push it as far as possible only a mid range oc really
