Hi everyone.

I recently noticed my i7 4790k (no overclocking) reaching 100°C while enconding a large video file with Handbrake which got me to look at my temps more closely, and I found that my idle temps are somewhere between 36°C and 45°C, occasionally reaching 50°C.

My CPU is cooled by a Corsair Hydro Series H100i v2. The first thing I thought to do was repositioning the heatsink and re-applying thermal paste (Arctic MX-4) but none of that made a difference...

It can't be normal nor good for the CPU to reach those temps under load, can it?
I could get a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo from a friend to try and see what happens.
What else do you think I should do?

Thanks in advance!

Do you have icue installed? If so, are you on the extreme(performance) pump setting? Are the fans working properly? Rad clean of dust?

Since you have the option to borrow another cooler, do so. If temps come down drastically it may be a sign of a failing pump. How old is the corsair? They have a 5 year warranty. You may be able to rma it.

Hi, thanks for the response!
iCUE installed, fans and pump at extreme performance and fans working properly. Radiator completely clean.
I'll try the other cooler as soon as I can.

So I've installed the Hyper 212 Evo to test out the temps and I'm getting idle at 32-34°C occasionally reaching 42°C. Under load, testing with the axact same file and presets in Handbrake, temps start out betweeen 65-72°C and then reach 92°C and pretty much stay there.

This is still too hot, right?

I should note, that lately I've been having trouble with my motherboard not recognizing my dual channel memory sticks and forcing me to boot my pc with either 8gb of ram or 16gb single channel. Don't really know if those two things can be related.

Thank you.
