i7 4790k VERY high temps when stress testing

Hello!

Basically, my brand new 4790k instantly spikes temps to 90-100 Celcius when im stress testing (or doing anything that uses the CPU near 100%). I don't notice any kind of throttling or similar problems so im just wondering whether my temp sensor might be faulty somehow or are the temps actually going that high?

I haven't yet gotten around to making sure everything is screwed in tight as possible(altough i did screw them in as well as i could yesterday). I'm using a Noctua NH-D14 and put in the usual pea sized blob of the thermal paste i had.

I haven't done overclocking either yet.

have you tried other stress test software other than prime95,some ppl said that prime95 cause haswell to overheating

I have not, ill try another and report back. It does heat up the same way when i was converting files so it shouldn't be prime95 specific.


edit: Tried with what i found, similiar instant spiking to high temps, the temps similarly go down instantly too which confuses me quite a bit, its always been a somewhat slow ascent with a slow descent on my earlier cpus. This just instantly jumps almost like its tied to the cpu usage or something

(notice in the 3rd and 4th album pictures, the max temp never went over 100 and stayed between 85-100 just like the actual cpu usage or such would)

Stress testing is useless. You can stress the CPU for days and then get a BSOD several minutes into a game or some other software. Test your CPU stability with the apps you will be using instead of bs like prime95.

Remove the Noctua, clean all surfaces and re-apply using Arctic Silver 5. If it doesn't spike then you know that the thermal compound/heat interface was bad. You could also try the stock cooler. If you still have problems it would likely be the CPU or the motherboard - did you already have the mobo and just got a new CPU or the mobo is also new?

Like Mdsiu said, remove/clean/reseat your heatsink. With that heatsink you shouldn't be going anywhere near those temps, even with Prime95. I'm running the DH-15 and the highest I get is around 70 degrees when I'm doing my best to set the CPU on fire so you shouldn't really be any different. The Noctua thermal compound that ships with your cooler is rated slightly better than Arctic Silver 5 but either should be for getting your temps under control.

Both new. I'll have to wait until i can find a store that sells some cleaning substance(hard to find anything useful in finland ) (or would just wiping it off with something work as the paste is still fresh and easy to get off?)

All those "everyday" items suggested around the internet just sound slightly worrying so i don't want to screw up too badly with those lol.

I chose your reply as a solution for now.

In the case of the above not solving the case, should i just presume the sensor is faulty or just return the cpu and/or motherboard and get new ones?

Isopropyl Alcohol does the job nicely, can be found at the drug store.
