Doing some research and I have found some really controversial stuff regarding the two CPUs. I'm using a MSI R9 380 4GB and looking on Amazon they are seriously the same price. I just really want to know which one is better? I'm thinking the 4790k is very popular and possibly optimized more on most games however the 6600k is newer, possibly meaning it's better. Ugh, all confusing for me. Any information would be fantastic, thanks!

The i7 4790k is clearly a bit faster than the i5 6600k (mostly because of hypertreading). The downside of the i7 cpu is the lack of upgradability. you will need a 1150 socket mobo with ddr3 ram and there is no faster cpu that will work with that setup. The 6600k on the other hand offers tons of future upgradability because the upcoming generations will still feature the same 1151 socket.

My advice: If you already have a 1150 mobo and the upgrade from your current cpu to the i7 4790k is reasonable, go for it. If you haven't got a mobo yet, and you're building from scratch, then it might be better to get the i5 6600k. The i5 will still offer great performance and you'll be able to upgrade your cpu in the future without having to buy a...

One is an i7 and the other is an i5. They should not be the same price... 6th gen prices are a little inflated, but there should be about $100 gap between them.

They don't generally optimize for CPUs, just comes down to how much the CPU can process vs another CPU.

The 4790k is a very capable and popular gaming CPU. You'll get a stable OC at around 4.5 Ghz. However, it is based on the LGA 1150 socket which is an older architecture and you'll be restricted to DDR 3 memory. The 6600K is based on the LGA 1151 socket, is newer , and uses DDR 4 memory but is an i5. I can't give you an OC on that one though - I just upgraded from t he 4790K to the 6700K which is the i7 version, this week and haven't gotten my new rig built yet. I'd say that if all things are equal the go for the more modern processor.
