I tried to upgrade my son's computer with a new processor. His old processor was a i5-4430. The motherboard is an ASUS B85M-E. I upgraded the BIOS to version 3505 as it was running 0601. It has an MSI Nvidia 970 GPU and two SATA drives. 8GB of DDR3 ram. 600w power supply.

When the computer powers up, the motherboard does not beep at all. The drives and the fan power up, but I don't get video from the GPU or onboard video. I don't think the machine is booting up as I have to hard power it down.

Is it possible to get a bad CPU? I would think that it's extremely rare and I'm leaning towards user error. What else can I try? When I put the old processor back in, it works fine.

Solution

Yes fans work fine. I'm just finding it real hard to believe that it's the CPU lol. I've never heard of anyone getting a bad one. I also find it strange the motherboard doesn't beep at all.

Now which CPU works, and which one doesn't?

The i5-4430 works and the i7-4790k does not work.

Just using the stock cooler. I don't let my son OC and the case has really good airflow. I was also using the stock cooler for the i5. I did not try using the old i5 fan with the new i7, but the fans look similar and they install in the same manner. I couldn't locate any damage to the CPU.

Guess I'll return it and hopefully the replacement works. Trying to avoid going to a newer gen processor as then I would have to upgrade the RAM and motherboard as well. I suppose I could find a motherboard with a newer socket and DDR3 support.

You could try to bump up to a Z97 since you have an unlocked CPU. But it still should work though. It's up to you though.

I might try that. I notice you have the 6600k. What brought this up is that he doesn't meet the min specs for Battlefield 1. The 6600k is listed as the min, but I find that hard to believe. You also have a better GPU than his 970. If I were to upgrade him to the 6600k, the price difference would allow me to also get a motherboard. At that point I'd just be in the hole for DDR4 RAM. You wouldn't have happened to play Battlefield 1 on your rig, would you have?

It's because the devs decided to use the latest software to CPU utiliziation. It will still work for older CPUs, just not well. I hear that patches are suppose to first this issue. I am not an FPS guy, so no BF1 for me. I still recommend getting the Z97, if you truly believe the CPU is not defective. Spending money on a new mobo, cpu, and ram is pointless if you don't have to. Not to mention the i7-4790k is more powerful than my 6600k, even though it's overclocked.

Solution

Returned the first 4790k to Amazon and ordered a replacement from TigerDirect. No go. Not posting. Any suggestions other than getting the Z97? I'm doubting it's the CPU... doubt I received two bad ones. The first was probably a good one.

No beeping at all. When I put the i5-4430 back in, the motherboard beeps one time before the BIOS Splash appears. So I know the speaker is working. Even when I boot with the 4790k with no ram in, I don't get any beeps. Removed the 970 GPU just incase power was the issue and still no go. Extremely frustrating. There's no way I got two bad CPUs from two different vendors lol. I'm assuming the Mobo and RAM are good since the i5 works.

Put a ticket in with ASUS, going to see what they say.

I'm starting off with the stock cooler that comes with the i7. I was running the stock cooler on the i5 with no issues. I'm assuming it will be sufficient if my son isn't OCing as the case has really good air flow.

If ASUS doesn't get back to me by Tuesday, I'll probably get the Z97.
