I7 4820k or I7 4770k

Hi there,

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and there's a sale on at my local computer store where I can get an I7 4820k with a Noctua D14 for $550. Or alternately I could get the I7 4770k for $460 and buy a cooler separately. I would be looking at overclocking a bit. I mostly play games but I also use Premiere Pro quite a lot. And yes i'm aware I would have to buy a new motherboard. Which CPU should I get? Also, any motherboard recommendations if I go down the LGA2011 route?

CPU: I5 3570k
RAM: 4 x 4gb of Kingston HyperX
GPU: Sapphire HD7950
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V LE Plus
PSU: Seasonic Gold 750w
Case: Fractal Design Define R3

You can find all of these components for cheaper on Newegg. For Premiere Pro and Overclocking I really recommend the Asus workstation boards. I'd go with the 4820K, as it's a faster stock and not too much more expensive. Both processors are roughly equal, especially if you are throwing an OC into the ring.
Save the extra money you'd be throwing at your computer shop and buy a really good aircooler or waterloop. The HyperEvo is a popular choice, also the H80 waterloop is pretty good as well.

I should add I'm running an i7 870 2.8GHz (LGA1156) at 4.2GHz with the H80 and an Asus P7P55 board. Also for Premiere Pro performance, a Raid0 or faster array and a good graphics card will get you faster rendering and compression times than a better CPU.

I don't live in US so Newegg isn't an option. Also, i'm currently only running one video card. Will it make a difference to the motherboard you've shown if I buy a second GPU?

The motherboard I posted is SLI capable. Adding a second GPU card should be no problem. This is a workstation board, which is why I selected it. Notice the 8 ram slots? Makes a big difference with Premiere Pro. I specialize in media editing equipment, so feel free to PM me if you need any more help.

I would go with the 4770k. It has superior single thread performance. I don't see any reason at all to pay more for the LGA2011 platform. The 4820k holds no advantage over the 4770k.

The 4820k would end up the same price (if not cheaper) as the 4770k after getting a cooler though.

No. You would still need a cooler to overclock either of them. The cpus themselves are very similar in price. It's the LGA2011 that is so much more expensive than the LGA1150.

He's talking about the motherboards. Yes you will need an aftermarket cooler for overclocking, and it's recommended you get one anyways to prolong your CPU's life. CTurbo, I choose the LGA2001 platform because there was a specific motherboard in that series which has great marks for Premiere Pro usage and supports more memory than the LGA1150 platform.
It's up to you Simmie, you may save a few bucks with the 1150 platform if you aren't planning on using Premiere Pro professionally.

The 4820k comes with a Noctua D14. Would it not be adequate for overclocking?

I would imagine the Noctura is plenty enough for a modest overclock. It certainly looks cool, just make sure you case is large enough!
